I think it was more about the throttle being in amongst the working parts of the loco and having to reach for it, the relocation of it to the rear was the solution. But still wasn't enough to let him operate it, Presumably because of insufficient training under the railways act.

The Isle of Man steam racket company has the Manannan with two Deltic diesels, that was originally a Royal Naval ship. Apparently when the Deltic locos were built at the Vulcan works it was with a government subsidy but when they started switching to electricity the government told the navy to use the Deltic engines to try and recoup some development costs.

The IOMSP Co Ltd's Manannan is powered by four Caterpillar Diesels and was built in Australia as Incat 050 in 1998.
Was called Devil Cat and then Top Cat when working as a commercial ferry.
2001 leased by the US Navy as Joint Venture (HSV-X1) till 2006.
Laid up till bought by the IOMSP Co Ltd in 2008, sailed Hobart to Portsmouth, refitted, renamed Manannan entered service May 2009.
Previous Vomit Comets were
Viking, which was powered by four Alstrom Ruston diesels.
Before her Snaefell powered by four Ruston diesels.
Not aware of Deltics ever powering any IOMSP craft.

I think Guy brushing stone walls at 140+++++ mph with his arm/head/leg is way more dangerous than the driven gear on that old steam engine.I think it was more about the throttle being in amongst the working parts of the loco and having to reach for it, the relocation of it to the rear was the solution. And I'm sure he will have had his arm somewhere down the front end of a Scania V8 or a Volvo engine while it's running, checking bits, I know I have....
I used to ride bikes fast at times but never that fast, I admire Guy for his ability (and others) to concentrate and have enough confidence to push himself/themselves to those speeds, "It's horses for courses".
I'm happy to admit I'm an old mule now....

Got into a fight on mannanan in 2014 on way to the TT. 3 am sailing, hadn’t slept for 20 hours so found myself a corner once boarded and got my head down. Woke up to a foot passenger who was absolutely steaming punching me in the back of the head, immediately set to rolling round the deck with him. One of the crew who must have been about 4ft feck all presumably saw it happen and ended up with him a head lock while more and more people joined in. Was an interesting start to the week to say the least, and it went downhill from there midweek too

I’d have accepted it if I started any of it. I just wanted a week of racing, not a pisscan picking a fight on the ferry or mate boyfriend causing trouble. Most expensive way I’ve been stressed for a week ever

ah the commerI can understand the love of a steam locos'/traction engines but diesel locos' just don't do it for me, but the dieselgeek was err, interesting to say the least.....
Although saying that, I'd love to strip/inspect/repair a Deltic engine, the triangular cylinder setup intrigues me, abit like the old commer knocker engine, but that's me being a diesel mechanic by trade...
