200 & 300 TDI uses belts the TD5 uses a chain. The disco you are looking at will be easier to live with than the range rover. You will need to get your hands dirty with any land rover, my dad has had shoguns and toyotas and has still gone back to land rover as have i,( i have had 2 range rovers and a disco) but at the end of the day its down to personal choice.
With the older discos really check underneath at the body / chassis mounting points, pull the rear carpet up in the boot they rot there and if it has sun roofs look for water staining on the head lining all discos have trouble with the roofs leaking at some point.
