i have 2 always gone for dual Xeons with 32gig memory, at present they are 12 years old, and I have no problems, except the cpu's are not windows 10 compatible, i have 6 HDD's, and run Linux, Win7, and windows 2000, depending on how i feel, The only thing I have done to this machine is put in a 4gb video card.....................................
No old computer is worth upgrading, as it's unlikely you would get a board, cpu, power supply, heat shield etc, for the price you could get a decent second hand one, the memory specs also change so you would probably need new memory, it's not really worth the hassle.
There are plenty of high spec PC's around quite cheap, just keep the old one as a standby.
