NVQs truly aren’t worth the paper they’re written on. I remember looking at the jobs my tradesman had done by the time he’d finished his 4 year apprenticeship and looking at what I was expected to be capable of upon completing a “Modern Apprenticeship” and thinking I was in for a world of hurt...
fabrication skills consisted of being able to mark out and drill holes.
welding skills were managing at least two joints per MIG, TIG and stick.
any extra capabilities were disregarded - literally. “Don’t bother including all the other work you did on that job, just make sure you meet the criteria for the marking sheet.”
thankfully I had a good head on my shoulders and made sure I was picking up heaps of different aspects of the job from my tradesman; then moved into another job where I got beasted by some older guys into being as good as I am now - no p***ing about with pointless bits of paper, they wanted a man who could fab, plate and weld without direction!
