That is an BMW flat twin motorcycle engine, you would think con rods were easily available from breakers.
You may never know why that had to be done. Half way somewhere, desolate, bad weather, no funds, or just because....

Shortened rod for some agricultural engine.
See, what did I tell you...
It is an aircooled engine more like mineHoi, I have a BMW.
I’ll admit, the gear change is like some 1950 Russian tractor......

No I found it on one of my Face book groups and thought it was interesting. Is it yours, or a pic you found? Are both sides the same?
Maybe they shortened the con rods to get lower compression for garbage fuel in some third world locale.
Lovely bike..I made the R75/5 Airfix kit..It is an aircooled engine more like mine
Strange though as most BMW aircooled twins have the same stroke: 70.6mm on the R50, R60, R75, R80, R90 and R100, capacity changes are just by varying the bore.
Perhaps someone wanting to test their welding
Thanks, though do fancy getting an R100RS again too....Lovely bike..I made the R75/5 Airfix kit..
probably to clear the flywheelVery odd to see a rod welded like that, but it's clearly held up so why not? My guess is they made a good rod from two trashed ones.
I wonder why they ground a chunk out under the little end eye though?
The balance weights on the BMW crank stick out more on the front and rear extremes, so cut out only required on the one side of each rod with a shorter rod.probably to clear the flywheel
