Hi,
I got a dose of something nasty on Saturday, not sure, but it could have been my exhaust repair.
I cut the silencer off around 3.00pm...all-in-one exhaust system from new so it has to be cut. Then I used a thin cutting disk to cut around the side next to the ridges front and rear, and peeled off the very rusty outer skin.
Cut the new skin as two sections and folded them to fit, cleaned up the ridges with the flap disk and welded the new covers on. I didn't notice anything by way of fumes, no 'residue', etc, other than maybe five or six times the arc 'flared' and fizzed for a couple of seconds each time. I assumed it was air-pockets or impurities in the metal as there was no smoke. Welded the silencer back on the car and finished around 5.00pm.
Started with a runny nose around 10.0pm and then around 11.00pm I stood up to go to bed and suddenly felt dizzy. Couldn't sleep, nose constantly running, joints feeling a bit off, couldn't lay down, couldn't sit up.
I was aware that Bobbie needed to be up for work at 6.00am so I got dressed and went back downstairs out of the way. My eyes were hurting too, couldn't stand any lights on. I made a cup to tea in the dark, moved to the front room and the LEDs on the DVD & video were really hurting my eyes!
So I got a wet cloth and plonked in on my eyes and then found that they felt hot and warmed the cloth, so I had to turn the cloth over every few minutes. Dozed a bit, on and off, Bobbie got up at 6.00 and I went back to bed. Up at 9.00am still feeling a bit groggy but went to the car-boot for some fresh air. Came home and fell asleep on the sofa.
Still feeling it a bit this morning, a niggly headache around my eyes and forehead.
I can only assume that there must have been some form of zinc based coating on the silencer but I didn't notice anything dodgy as I was doing it. It looked like an inner skin of very bright metal, assumed it was stainless with a mild-steel outer.
It's not a problem I've had before, but I did once weld some galv and as I recall it created a lot of white smoke and left a white residue. What do you reckon...?
Regards
Peter
