looking to add storage area to the loft in the new house.
So far, we have created an opening for the hatch and new ladder.
Looking at the existing joists up there, it seems a mix of 3 X 2 and 4 X 2.
Now these are only holding up the ceilings, so no load going on them.
Planning on putting in 10 X 2 joists independent of the existing , with 18mm ply board on top.
Quick measuring indicates a span of around 5.5 metres.
We can only physically get timbers up there around 3.2 metres long ( i dont want to have to erect scaffold towers and take the lower part of the roof off this time of year )
The plan is to splice them with a welded U section formed from 3mm plate. This would be approx 800 long and the full depth of the joist. I would then look to bolt through the 2 outer steel plates and the timber they are sandwiching. Bolts every 200mm and staggered vertically ( 75mm up from bottom and 75mm down from top) Probably 12mm stud to suit the stock pile left over from a job.
Does that sound about right ? Will be going in at 400 crs and will have noggins etc . Overall width will be something like 3 metres in total.
Might be a bit overkill ?, but i'm thinking if I end up doing something in the loft , then it will be a good basis for starting with.
