I recall a graphics tablet some years ago that relied on a stylus that emitted a stream of sparks to generate sharp audio pulses, the time of flight of which was measured using two ultrasonic transducers, and used to determine the x,y position of the stylus tip. A third transducer would allow a 3D determination. Line of "hearing" would be necessary, however.
