I've always bought my recovery through my insurance for each vehicle, keeps everything co-termed and it's normally a very good deal and works out at a few quid a month.
I've broken down a few times, mainly in our old Focus which has now moved on - the clutch pipe kept popping off the master cylinder - I eventually fixed a block of solid rubber against it via on of the air box bolts so it could not move anymore! It also ran out of electric-trickery on the M48 Old Severn Bridge which was a tad sketchy as there's no hard shoulder. Got towed off the bridge by highways and then had to wait for the recovery guy to turn up, he got me started again and then followed me home as it was only a few miles.
My D3 broke down recently also - turned out to be the tank pump, and they got it going again after a bit but it wasn't right and eventually got it recovered back to my tame spanner man's workshop. I wasn't driving it however a friend was but because it was on the insurance it was all sorted. Did take em a few hours but it was peak rush hour on the M4.
