With a split die and a proper die holder you control the opening of the die with the grub screws. Slacken off the 3 grub screws then wind in the middle grub screw to force the split open, then take up the slack on the outer two grub screws to stop the die from moving.
Cut your thread and test with a nut, if the nut won't go on, back off the middle grub screw and tighten the outer grub screws and take another cut.
Repeat till you achieve the correct fit.
Large dies often come with a cross drilled grub screw used to control the opening of the die.
