Can these cheap ones actually make something useful? A plastic part that's broken off a vehicle/machine/tool for example? Or are they just good at making little toys??

but, in general: yes. they can be used for *much* more than little toys.
so far, I've printed
a kerfmaker (woodwork tool),
some bandclamp "corners",
a new footplate for a Bosch jigsaw,
a replacement drawer for a parts dispenser,
some routing templates,
some painting stencils,
some tool wall holders,
a fan cover grille for my Elu planer/thicknesser
a set of fixed angle mitre gauges for the radial arm saw,
a cup holder for exmrsegg's mobility walking frame,
a fascia for a pc bench power supply,
plus a few parts for the printer itself.
at the moment, I'm in the early stages of designing + printing a custom camera rig for miniegg for her final year uni degree.
