thread file use

not used very often but invaluable when u do use . simply chose the right thread pitch and file across the damaged thread end. theres about 8 v in the file so as it goes across 6 good threads it does not run off on the damaged thread . 1st pic restored 3d pic damaged with big hammer

I have a couple, but never been used in anger. Do they tend to want to jump out of the thread when you are using them?

Grip the bolt well, then line the file with the first damaged thread. Then pull back to locate the file, then gently, but with firm pressure push forward. Then repeat and move along, they will restore the thread.

I used that to get me out of the fire, but like any restored thread the strength is comprised.

a light pressure on them and start off just before the damaged thread and run round over it and its only cutting a small amount at a stroke

Just remember the radius filing technique you were taught in metalwork classes.

Used them in anger lots of times and still have quite few, Some even have a section on the end to dress nuts/threaded holes etc,

Eww I have one like that in the image - don't even know where it came from but they are pretty useless. If you're going to buy one get a good quality one not a cheapie.

What brand(s) would you recommend looking for?.

Mine are Sykes-Pickavant. Not sure they still make them though, they must be 35 years old at least.

Mine too. Only needed it once to repair the thread on a big bearing puller (Also a Sykes by coincidence), would have been ******** without it.

Also somewhat handy when you can't find a thread gauge.

I have used them on drive shaft ends "CV joints" that have been hammered then ground to a taper lol

S-P still do them in 4 thread forms - Unified, Metric, Whitworth and BSP.

I've used them to resurrect many a BSA and Triumph crankshaft where some gormless muppet has hammered the end trying to get the shaft out of the bearing. It's the only way when a two part die isn't available and you don't have the luxury of a lathe to screw cut with.

Thread rescue tools are a workshop must have, I will jockey these gadgets into the mix.

Internal expanding thread chaser, stick it in the hole expand and turn out to clean up a thread in a blind hole. Its better than useing a tap from the top because its not trying to overcut the thread.
