would u want to make your own . get it wrong and it will be expensive blowing an engine up . more than a piston will cost
Burt Munro made his own pistons!
Didn't he also destroy a few!Burt Munro made his own pistons!
Now that's a good idea. The amount I've spent on it this year in suspension upgrades, modifications and dyno time is getting ridiculous so I'm keen to keep costs down.Put a zx9r engine in , then turbo
I wouldn't be suprised if pistons were considered almost as consumable as spark plugs? Whether the stories about dropping some nitroglycerin angina pills into the fuel tank were true or not i believe he ran on methanol most of the time which is a lot cooler running than petrol and experimenting with nitromethane resulted in lots of melted pistons?Didn't he also destroy a few!
Or the one with a nut and bolt with a big washer under the bolt head to cover up the detonated hole.Just get in the shed and do it.
I did here a tale of a bloke who bought a bike cheap as it had a holed piston, took head off Tig welded it up in position, put repaired head back on, changed oil rode it to work, sold for a profit
I can't at the moment, the garage is being extended and doesn't have any fancy fittings like doors, windows or a roof yet.Just get in the shed and do it.
Or the bloke who migged the hole in his KTM300exc piston overnight so he could ride the second day of an enduro......Or the one with a nut and bolt with a big washer under the bolt head to cover up the detonated hole.
Some right bodgers around.
Truer than a very true thing.....blew up my old Triton, oil all over the back tyre. Slid a long way at around 60mph. Had all my leathers on so not too much blood!
Some Suzukis do that, too.You get oil all over your back tyre even when a triumph engine hasn't blown up
My mate bought a cheep BSA Bantam 175 that ran like 3 legged dog, I striped the top end of the motor and the piston crown had been holed and repaired with a nut and bolt. New piston for 5 bob and the job was a good unJust get in the shed and do it.

that's the price you pay for vertically split crankcases, Japanese were smart enough to split theirs horizontally. You get oil all over your back tyre even when a triumph engine hasn't blown up
It's when they lock up and don't let go, try a TZ350 or TZ750 when they nip or worse seize the gearbox defiantly flying W effect and if you were really unlucky mangled your nuts on the filler cap on the way offAll for home building but be sure of your calcs, if a car engine blows you'll coast to a halt, when a bike engine lets go it's usually a lot more painful
