Specialists get them direct from the manufacturer at a fraction of the price, Mitsubishi wanted over £300 for mine and I bought 2 transponders direct from the manufacturers for £90, then there was 5 minutes getting the system into set up mode and programming them both to the vehicle; contrary to popular belief you don't need all this software for many cars as manufacturers put in a back access to allow them in without a computer.

Modern BMW keys are quite clever, they store all the diagnostic codes from the car so to get the codes read you just give the key to the dealer and he sticks it in his computer, they don't need to go near the car. They also store settings from the car so the next time you get in it it will set the radio, air con etc to how the last user of the key had it. So I expect a new key is going to be bend over and think of England time...

That could be a problem, you could ask the main dealers if they could program one for you if you had one

Took my Touareg key to a local locksmith that advertised car key programming, Put he key into a reader then tried to put the info onto a new key fob, He tried 3 times but still would not speak to the car starting system. The blade that he cut did open the door, So gave him a couple of quid just for the blade.

asked a mobile man today for a price of a new key fob for my mrs citroen Picasso , £125 quid , would have had a go at repairing but micro buttons broke off inside anyone ever had a go at soldering new ones on ?
