Need a new shed...

Need a new shed to take my powder-coating junk and some storage so i can reclaim some space in my main shop.

So biggest i can squeeze in is 8' x 8' - have found a few in fencing/shed shops and seem to be around £800, all have 15mm boarding and what seems pretty weak 45 x 34mm framing.

Now, is it best to go store-bought or DIY??

My main concern with store option is the door height is only 6' and i'm 6' 1-1/2" plus the pent roof goes from 1.8m to 1.95m which at the lower (back) side is pretty much touching my head.

Maybe better to build using 45 x 70mm and thicker cladding??

Main concern with DIY is it takes a whole lot longer and getting decent, straight timber is not to easy.

if i was building a shed (and will be for a mate in a few months time)

i will be using cls timber for the frame £1.50 a 2.4 meter lenth and then clad it with treated lap timber on the out side and good ply for the roof covered with roofing felt i recon 24 lenths will do the frame then clad

will get some scafolding boards for the floor

I would also use CLS, doubled up on the corners because it would be built sectional, a cut off saw and a nail gun and could be built easily over a weekend.

Find some double glazed doors and windows off facebook and the like, I got a great door in it's frame and a window for £70 when building my garage.

Scaffold boards are also fairly easy sourced, cheap enough and make a good solid floor.

I did build one once before but is was smaller, used 18mm OSB for roof and floor, still got the nail gun hopefully be still get the nail reels for it. Lined the inside with 12mm chipboard pallet tops that i got from work (printers)

Pressure treated for the floor framing ?

It was built sectional too. Worst part as i recall was sealing/painting it.

My knees are not what they used to be so would need to build the panels on some saw-horses or some other raised work surface.

Without a doubt, sitting raised from the ground and with a bit of damp proof summat between the wood and the bricks/blocks.

my shed when i got it it was free but rotted at the bottem cost me £70 4 new fence posts to sit on 10 for a few bits of lap and £20 for a few scaffold boards and a days work

go for home build,those others are virtually four fence panels with a door and roof,a good f..t would blow the ...doors of!

Hmm, sort of leaning towards a DIY job, getting a decent door height is a big plus for me plus the weedy timbers they use are a concern. Will phone a few timber yards this week.

Will have to build two sides then treat/paint them as access will not be possible once installed, front and one side will be ok. I like the idea of a standard door too, thanks. Not worried about windows, just more space where you cant hang stuff inside

I think the pent/lean-to roof is more suitable in this case, slope to rear wall as there is a wide gravel drainage strip there.

i bought a 7x7 flimsy from a closing sale for £35! put it n outdoor store,time came when i needed it & I'm in rented accom' so the roof by then was rot[7yr] i took the 4 sides to a dip tank,made a quick box/angle frame on baseplates and spiked those to the ground with the shed sides hanging off them with a 12" gap underneath at least when we move we can take it with us ,all steel was galvanised after fabricating,i used onduline for roofing,in the end a cheap long life shed as the gardens exposed to westerly gales,its proved itself.

Years back I got a local (to where I was then) shed company to build one to my spec to house my 1953 Sunbeam S8 motorcycle. I needed an extra wide door and a stronger floor and taller walls than standard. Cost me £540 for a 10 x 7. When we moved it came with us and 15 years later the wife still uses it as a feed shed for her chicken (door bottom is a bit rat nibbled )

Here's where I want it...



Yes I know it will block the up-n-over But I also want to remove that, behind the shed will be cladded and to the left I want a single 5'-6" wide door. This garage is in a useless position (for a garage)as the biggest car you can get in is an MG Midget or a smart car! The access is at 45deg to the house as we are in a corner between two there houses in a cult-de-sac. The guy who installed it had an MG and he pushed it in and out!

The base will be a small job - luckily its all concrete but i have to build up one end to level out the ramp, about 50mm IIRC. I want it so its removable should we move house. Not sure of the best way to do this yet.

The Up-n-over door can be stored down the side of the garage where the weeds are currently residing.

Front of the shed will be about 3' from the front of the main house line, hopefully thats ok for a shed, will ask our neighbour of course.

Can't join it into the main garage as an annexe as it falls foul of planning then and would need permission, AFIK a temporary structure like a shed is ok as long as floor area is below 15sqm.

Makes no odds - i can't physically fit anything much bigger in 15sq m is still way bigger than what i need and as long as it does not cross the building frontage or perimeter boundary it should be good to go.

Just got to decide on how best to make a level platform, remove and fill in the up-n-over then crack on.

Am having to move out my 2 garages due to council building on the land there the galvanised metal garages one is about 10ft x 20ft and the other is 10.5ft x 24ft there both free but whoever wants then takes them down there bolted in 8ft sections just put new roof on the 10.5ft x 24ft garage and new half on the other but stopped when council told me about the building so if anyone wants them there yours but not just yet as still trying to sell all wood working machines to make room for the lathes mill etc

back end just build it in blocks to level it out they will be removable even if cemented in 3 blocks sideways 2 blocks on top should give you the required height of 12" + cement at rear corners

you also need a middle support

taking door off just build it with cement blocks

you can build a shed in side/front as long as neighbours dont complain about it otherwise its permitted devolopement even for a garden shed as there not officially menat to be built in front or side garden

Can you elaborate a little - i only need to go about 50mm to get level.

Removing the up-n-over would be easier for me in wood i think, 2x4 framing and same cladding as new shed. Door I'm not so sure about - its a big door so needs to be fairly well built.

I was reading planning outlines and it read like the main concerns were area if shed to area of garden ratio and not beyond front elevation of main property plus no more than 2.5m tall if within 1m of boundary.

oh sorry didnt read that so use bricks to higher it off the floor or even a flag cut in half double it up

that would be correct a shed cannot be built infront of the front wall

id still use blocks to fill up the front door area of garage as more securer

if your going to not be able to use the garage door and move the shed when you move why not just build the shed in front of the actal garage door

Because occasionally I need to get bigger stuff in and out - the gap left will be about 5' 6" so maybe i could fit a 3' main door and a 2' 6" semi locked door - this will give useful access and if needed a bigger opening by using the smaller door too. The side door is pretty narrow so I can't get big stuff in our out.
