Can you use a normal washer as a seal?

Hi, bit of a strange question. Thought it would be best to post here, as people seem to know their metals

I need to seal a extention pipe to a diesel injector. It came from factory with a small stainless steel washer as a seal, but i need some new ones and cant seem to find any on the internet. I have some standard washers that would work if i made the I.D the same as the old ones.

Could i just use a standard stainless steel washer aslong as the dimensions are correct?
I can get the size i need in copper but im not sure if these would be suitable as it came from the factory with stainless ones.

It is to seal on the high pressure side, on a common rail diesel.

The washer needs to be softer than the material clamping it so it deforms to form a seal, filling in imperfections between the two faces. A normal washer is unlikely to be any good, especially at common rail pressures.

Be extremely cautious around high pressure systems, they can inject you with fuel causing horrible injuries, amputation is often the only option.

Try a fuel injection specialist or the manufacturer for the proper seal.

Hi, They probably had concentric rings pressed in them and when tightened down to seal they have flattened out so that they now look like ordinary flat washers.

Go along to any diesel shop they will have them, They ones you have are a softer material than SS.
They are designed to give and seal.
Normally copper, heavy tin copper alloy, or a heavy tin alloy.
They work hand in hand with a seal in the pipe.

Ok, i'll go to the local injector place. It looks like stainles but obviously not.
Main problem is they are a funny size that i cant seem to find on the internet other than made from copper

Would it be possible to use the copper ones as i can easily get a hold of them?

Copper is possible, but they are an odd size for a reason.
Fords used to have a odd size on their injector systems.

Don't start me on a ford Mondeo system

Its not so much a odd size, I.D-6mm O.D-10mm, i just cant seem to find them.

It's not one of the normal seals that would be changed, as where it is,there is a locking collar (that is crimped on) so when you loosen the normal injector pipe it doesnt unscrew the extension out of the injector.

It one of them jobs i wished i never started, it's just been one problem after another. But the leaking injectors is hopefully the end of it.

What car is it on ? The injector pipes on my 2.0hdi are not reusable they are supposed to be replaced once removed. I have seen people reuse them but not successfully.

Do what I do and drill out a large copper penny washer to fit the internal bore size required.

AH its the adapter, yep imo go to injector specialist.

that could mean new injectors or recon ones is it just a extension piece or looks like it's part of the injector

The adapter screws into the injector, it then has a tube with pegs on it, crimped onto the adapter. the pegs go into the little cutouts in the injectors. The crimp parts job is to stop the adapter unscrewing when undoing the normal injector pipe. You're supposed to remove them as one piece but whoever has taken it apart before me has just unscrewed the adpater breaking the crimp and the seal.

Id rather buy the washers from somewhere and do it myself, as i can guarantee if i took the injectors to the local diesel place, he will say they are all knackered, you'll need brand new ones at $$$$.

There is nothing wrong with the injectors just the seals are not doing there job anymore

Been to the main dealers today, to try and get the washers and i cant get them.
Also the local injector place has shut so cant get them off him either.

Anyone know of any companies on the internet that might do them?
