Hi i myself am going to have ago at some sculpture/artwork using my newly brought plasma cutter and arc welder i will post the picture here in the next few days when i have completed the task. But was wondering if anyone else has done artwork or is maybe going to have ago if so please post the picture.

Not very intricate or anything, but one of the first things i used my plasma for was this.

Iv`e done a few similar pieces since but this was one of my favorites, cut from 1/2" plate and a hammered finish, life size and stands about 5`10"

not sure if you could call it artwork as such...but at school we got a load of tiny 12 year olds in to do "recycled sculpture".
being a big boy now (15) i was enlisted to do all the welding
I'll post some pics if i can find them, it was mainly a couple of exhuast pipes stuck together but some of them were quite nice.

It`s a Cebora Powerplasma 3100, tbh, the output is a bit marginal for that thickness, but as you can see, there was quite a lot or piercing involved too and it handled it fine. Wouldn`t buy another though, i bought it at the same time as a 3.5kw FIAC compressor and the bill came to £1600, i`m sure there are far more capable machines out there for much less money

Made this stainless "vase" last year (one of two).

My stainless TIG was a bit dodgy and it had a couple of pin holes in it when full of water.

I agree Wyn, lovely piece's, well done! Did you cold hammer form the flutes, bend them with heat or a bit of both...? Btw, I must say; I don't think much of the state of your bedroom (all your bed sheets are absolutely filthy dirty... ).

JayRS4 - Beautiful! Well done! ...any chance of a close-up of the surface finish? Are they for wall hanging, stand alone, insets for a larger piece...? How do you display them?

Knoba... I started off beating it around a piece of 3" aluminium, then went down to a bit of 1" steel using a rubber mallet to give a cone shape (a couple of hours and too much sweat).
Then a slight overlap joint tig'ed up at the front. Then welded on the extra bit at the front to make it look like it just wraps around (too tricky to weld it inside). Could have done with that nice setup you've got for pollishing stainless to get the weld on the front looking tidy.

The top bits were also beaten around 1" round till it looked ok. All of it was done cold.



I've got to admit it is a nightmare getting to sleep with the "chips" from the milling machine stuck in the sheets.

Wyn - It looks like it's about 3mm thick? You've done a lovely job on it all the same! I like it!

If a machine can make it better, than by hand, where is the added value in the hand made stuff? Surely, it has to be in the maker's subtleties and nuances! They alone would make it far more valuable & unique piece, than something mass produced. Your piece has all that and more!

Knoba....It was 1.6mm and a nightmare to bend.

I chuck the sheets over the lathe and milling machine to try and keep grinding dust and other stuff off the slides and moving parts. My welding bench and vice are pretty close.

The sheets do catch fire now and again, but nothing to get too excited about

DROOL.... ...Oh my days! What I wouldn't give for some machinery like that! You look after them too - they're so clean! It always such a pleasure to see someone looking after their tools so well. Well done!

Now that's a set-up!

I'm the same with my tools; metal dust, oils, etc. play havoc with all my other tools especially the woodworking side. I try; to keep everything separate, buy tools with cases, & make proper dust covers for all my bigger stuff. It works well for me too.

I was only messing about chap! I'm glad I got to see your machines though.

No chance of a close up of that one i`m afraid, long gone was a one off for a customer, although i still have my original drawings. If I can find the pics I made a similar male version for a bar (and a duplicate that sits in front of someones fireplace.

The dancer was wall hanging and backlight from below, sadly i never got any pics of it`s final position which is something i like to do with all my work.

Once i`ve got a few other things sorted out i`ve got another one to do for fun, and a commisioned one (although VERY different) in copper (picked up a few decent size sheets when a scappy i use to use closed down)

Yea I make metal art, mainly fish though, mackerel, bass, blue marlins, rainbow trout and so on. Some are painted, some just coloured with blow torch. Some have brackets to hang on the wall, some are mounted on to colour washed wood. I have done other bits and bobs as well, celtic crosses, boats, welded chain candle sticks.

JayRS4 - It's always a pleasure to see any work, at any level. The finish kinda looks (from here) like severe pitting & rusting, then waxed. It's one of the only times I have had any admiration for rust!

...hammering the finish must have taken a fair bit of time though! Top stuff.

(definitely one of my favourite haunts). A random selection of user's albums are shown, at the bottom, of the main page here. Even if your projects may not involve welding directly, if it's metal work, I'd say that counts. (techniques, tools, etc.)
