What exactly do I need?- gas lense glass/Pyrex cup upgrade

Hi. I'm looking at purchasing a larger gas cup and like the idea of the large glass/Pyrex cups

My issue is I'm not exactly sure what items I need, some kits with gas lenses mention fitting kits for the wp26 torch which is what I got with my rtech welder

Any advice appreciated

You'll need a "kit" for the torch, and a corresponding "lens" to fit the kit...

I bought one of the ceramic gas lens kit combo's off eBay, one of the better purchases I've ever made.
I'd like a pyrex one for being able to "see" more, but can't warrant the money for one at the minute...

I ended up using pyrex guitar slides and e-cigarette tubes on my economy version using a wp9 torch with gas lens

What are you doing that makes you desire these things? What i mean is, if you have money to burn, but do need to go to such expense?

Basically I require a larger cup anyway, and I've heard nothing but praises about the mesh gas lenses over the normal gas release tip, am i right in thinking the standard style is a pipe with a few holes in the end and the gas lenses disperse(atomise?)the gas better

Got a job on at the minute welding 3" exhaust externally and with backpurging and a nice flow on the front I'm hoping I can get a nice weld

I'd like to get my setup as best for the job as possible or at least make sure the Weld pools got a nice gas covering as I'm quite new to this still

You'll want either a CK set up or a furick cup.
The CK set up has a different collet body with a "collet" of sorts with a mesh end around it, the collet screws into the modified collet body and then your Pyrex cup just slides over the end with the aid of an o ring.. you also have a different insulator. They cost around £30ish if the top of my head but don't quote me.

Furick cups, I've never used one.. best man for that is @westcoweld

We sell them too, I think I took langys last ones a while back, correct me if I'm wrong.

CK stuff has become widely available in the U.K. From a large amount of suppliers other than rapid

You'll need two or three different ceramic cups, biggest about a ten (16mm i/d), and insert a do-nut of stainless wire wool inside them.

Put the bunch of tenners that I've saved you in an envelope and post them to me so I can spend them on something that isn't snake oil
or general ********.



Just in case your still not convinced place a Branston Pickle Jar on the bench with an item to weld behind it and run a weld while looking through the jar.

Don't buy a cheep Chinese gas lens kit as I have one in the bottom of my scrap bin that you can have, that is if the wife hasn't been in the workshop
and tidied up. One layer of mesh is only useful for straining tea, or keeping flies out of the larder.

If you start getting into exotics like inconel and titanium then it's a bit different, like the picture attached you want no colour just silver or gold on titanium.

I havnt bought any in from the states for a while now but had a quick look and they are about £40-45 for the CK gas saver kit at the moment, I will check it out

Depending on the size you want to go to the furwick cups will be cheaper. They are designed to pop over any wp9/20 gas lens
As your torch is a 26 all you need is a stubby gas lens then buy your cup. Simple.

For stainless exhausts you don't need to go to that extream.
A standard gas lens with a no 7 or 8 cup is more than plenty for any SS work. Especially exhausts where surface oxides are inevitably gonna happpen through use.

Probably looking through one as your welding, will be somewhat similar to looking through a pyrex cup...

Spot on Omniata. I have welded titanium tafts ( thin flanges ) onto pipe using the bottle technique. The clear pyrex shade from a Camping Gaz lantern
was used like a giant ceramic. Just doable but not the best optical quality.

Yes the wire wool is rolled into a ball and a hole poked though the centre. Slide it over the tungsten and up into the ceramic and pat it flat with
head of a nail or whatever you have at hand to form a do-nut shape.

Over the years I've made loads of followers and backers for titanium welding and all had a wire wool diffuser incorporated in them.

Well you kinda did mate, "size 10 ceramic (16mm ID)" I see written above. A #10 ceramic is fairly big in my book, the biggest I own is an 8. Fair enough you didn't say gas lens, but using one of those does away with the need for the wire wool.

It depends what you're doing and what people are paying for though, in no way needed to get a sound weld but exhaust customers don't know what they're looking at half the time they just see the pretty rainbows and think oh that must be good.
