Record Vice no. 24 (spot the fake)

Hi

I purchased these two record vices and i'm half way through restoring them. Being the same model they both have some small differences. I think this due to age of manufacture. As i'm looking to sale one i just want to make sure one is not a not fake. Please can anyone offer any advice. Is this age of manufacture or is one a fake?

My genuine Record No23 looks identical to the front one, I would say both are genuine but the rear one of an older generation.

There were many copy Record vices made in India - when my brother lived in New Delhi apparently they turned up in the market on a regular basis and seemed to have been cast using a genuine one as a pattern - that was perhaps 40 years ago

I have one of those early ones with the rounded handle, its a model 83 quick release and has a war dept "Broadarrow" symbol on it with a date of 1944, which if legit has lasted very well

As pdg mentioned, the one with the rounded end for the handle is merely older than the other one.

Regarding colour, whatever colour(s) you like are the right colour. End of the day, they're for function, not show. No use painting them in a colour you aren't fond of. Originality is nice in theory, but it's pointless when you can't stick the original colour.

As the founding member of the RSPCV I will upholding the tradition of the RSPCA of removing those abused vices and re homing. I am sure people like @pdg and @MattF will be able to help.


It is a shame vices like that are left to slowly decay.

I am willing to re home old vices and the siblings of old tools.

Personally I wouldn't do any more than you have.

New vices aren't made from the same stuff, once painted it would look no different.

Its providence would be lost

Thanks all for your comments. Stock colour would be easy to sale but its abit boring. Plus trying to keep the costs down and not buy loads of different paint.

The only thing about colour...

The one you want to keep - paint pink for all the difference it makes.

The one you want to sell - stock colours make things easier to sell and fetch more money.

Painting a machine or bit of kit (whatever colour) is the worst thing you can do if you are planning to sell it.........

Leaving it in its honest natural state will get more buyers.

Clean it up but leave original paint if selling. The lack of jaws on the newer one is going to cause more of a conundrum in terms of which one to sell.

My vice is a fake, its as rough as a goats knee, horrible, you would know if you had one.

I am an idiot because i aquired two big vices and sold the good Record one to my mate.

I also found a huge old vice in a skip without the thread screw, i gave that away to another mate thinking it was useless, later on i found the screw in the bottom of the skip, which was now useless to me as i didnt own the rest of the vice anymoreI had spent half an hour getting to a oil cooled Oxford at the bottom of the skip which turned out to be just the empty case

The jaws are causing me problems. Going to have to get some new ones made up. The standard screws which i purchased separately off ebay dont fit the newer vice. One screw has broken off in the vice and the thread has gone in the other hole (this was like it when i bought it). Going to try an extractor to remove broken screw and get a tap and die set to make the screws fit / thread. Im very new to this so not 100% on my approach need to watch more youtube. I only wanted a small working vice to start with and now i have two giant ones that need restoring.

I want to try and mix and match the best bits to make up one really good one (if they fit). Just want to get the jaws sorted. Explained above.

Just get some mild steel bar and make a pair of plain faced jaws.
