Start of a new project, my first real go at a 3d sculpture. After spending a long time looking at pictures of different birds on Pinterest the general inspiration for the head is a bald eagle and the body based on a parrot.

A bit more done yesterday, i've decided the body is too long and fat so i'll sort that out before putting in the rest of the ribs

are you saying the rest is rubbish the body and wings are going to be done in sheetmetal, hopefully stainless, copper and brass so I can hopefully get some good colours, the beak i'll do in brass too I reckon.

We have a geka punch at work and they are made from the scrap slugs it produces. I've just used a smaller punch to push out the iris out a little bit.

Ha ha, I've used some of those slugs for eyes before.

I use them all the time and the angular shaped offcuts from the cropper end.

Managed to get in the workshop this afternoon. I decided to try fill the gaps around the eyes with braze, it's kind of turned out ok in the end but I got too much on the eyeballs and spent an hour cleaning it up with a dremel. I got the bottom beak attached and made a start shaping the top beak.

I thought the head would be the hard part of the phoenix but I got stuck on its feet. I made these this afternoon if I can braze them without melting the wire they should be ok.

Yes, that was the idea, but over night I've been thinking it might be better to weld just the tops and leave the wire showing underneath.

No that's just a coincidence I've been asked to make it for someone, if they like it, it's off to lanzarote

I had to read the start twice. Your first real go at 3d sculpture. I've always thought your work was 3d and **** hot... (pun intended) really love the bird! Also really like these! Awesome work!
