The Yellow Ardvarks tips on getting a good find.
Recently I have done very well in my finds and hunts. So much some have asked how? One has accused me of faking my finds.
Well. Here are some of my tips.
I am medically unfit to work, so as an excuses to get out of the house a friend will take me out and we look.
Tip 1
Every time you are out, look out. Keep some folding money on you.
Avoid the big charities shops, they are expensive and are bound by some laws on what they can or can not sell. What they can not sell they have under hand ways to make money.
Look in the small charities shops, don’t be scared to ask if they have it out the back. Dear old Mildred will want a sale. Cash is king.
Tip 2
Get known in the better shops, be regular. Pop in say hello. Also take stuff to them. You may get a pound or two. Or a deal on what you want. See Note 1
Tip 3
The better shops I find are, in no particular order:
Tip 4
Don’t be in a hurry if you are wanting a bargain. I find they come up, but you have to wait. If you need something you will have to dig into your pocket and pay.
Tip 5
Skips. The law is clear. You take it without permission you are guilty of theft. So ask. If they say no, chalk it up and forget it.
If they say yes, thanks in some gift or an offer of a gift is always good.
Do Not open a skip. Theft again. Note 4.
Late night skips, on someone drive, or outside and something nice. Have the balls to knock and ask. Skip space is money.
Tip 6
Flea Bay.
Gum Tree.
Freecycle.
Local papers.
Word of mouth.
All good places, spend a bit of free time.
http://picclick.co.uk/?q=old+garden+tools. Ok linked to the E bay, but I got a set of BA taps and dies last year. £1. Why he listed them as AB dead taps.
Tip 7
We all have our metal suppliers, our welding shops, our local place we deal with, you know the ones were we chat as we wait. Ask for a discount. Jo blogs up the road may have it cheaper, but you not know there. You are at your local place, ask for at least a price match. Or a discount. They will want a sale. Again if they say no, suck it up.
At work, if they are junking something ask. What the worse they can say?
Just a few words to help. There are places for bargains. Just look.
Any one else got good tips, add away.
Lets share our knowledge, when we are dead it is lost to everyone.
Note 1. They will get to know you, leave them a contact phone number.
Note 2. Dogs trust, air ambulance, 2 good examples. Avoid Oxfam and heart foundation, way too big to care.
Note 3. I have been dealing with my yard for years, I trade a skill for a rummage or bits.
Note 4. Any skip fenced of or with a shut lid and you open it, theft. Outside shops or retail sites, NO. Belongs to the skip company. But ask, you never know.

The better shops I find are, in no particular order:
- House clearance shops.
- Small charity shops. Local ones to you. See note 2
- Army Surplus stores, they have an odd collection. My local one will trade old and new kit.
- Junk shops. Harder to find, but worth a look.
- That odd antique shop, you know what seems to be full of dust and rubbish.
- Your local recycling tip. Getting harder, but can be done. Tea coffee and a good word.
- Local metal yards. Don’t be scared to ask, can I have that? I trade a skill for a rummage. See note 3.
