Suggestions for class 2 driving jobs.

My son has just about had enough now as he worked over to help the recovery ccompany he works for out as they were flooded with calls today.

Sadly while out on a pitch black motorway he pulled a car on the bed and bent the steering rack.

They operate a bonus system of £1 an hour which takes them over the minimum wage BUT ANY damage and you loose 450 quid from your next payback etc. This apparently pays for their insurance excess.

But it means he is now working for below the minimum wage.

What makes matters worse is they tax them on the full wages and THEN take the bonus off them.

So he is looking to get out of recovery because they all operate this bonus system in an industry fraught with danger and inherent problems of dragging cars onto backs of lorries. They are also banned from driving them on.

Anyway all suggestions appreciated. He lives in Kidderminster so not a massive amount of industry left round here now.

I believe most of the parcel delivery is very poorly paid and best avoided.

Nope it was all going quite well till an hour ago. he finishes at 6pm but worked over to help out as they had 20 jobs queued up. on his third job after 6pm he notices the wheels out of alignment after he has the car on the bed. He phoned me as wicked as a wasp as it was me who said help out if you can it should help to get the class 1 they have promised. Not sure who is more gutted him or me..... irronically you mention parcel delivery and he had only just mentioned subcontracting to a courier and leasing a van...... so I guess that's out.

What made matters worse is he applied for the AA two weeks ago and was not sucessful. This job that cost him his bonus ws an AA job (subcontracted)

Just do your home work, a distant acquaintance has been doing it for years now works for DPD and says its good but some others tell me tails of woe one bloke I know is very sharp and went for some training, once he did the sums it would have been a very long day 15 hours plus. Just make sure he knows the deal before he commits to a van rental. Has he looked at other non driving work?

He has done a fair bit of other types of work but the jewsons he was working at as tool hire supervisor was been run badly and they closed it 3 months after he got out into this recovery job...... he could see it coming.

Surely if they stop the bonus, they stop the tax, or is it a way to look like they are still paying the minimum wage by still paying the bonus & then stopping the money. Still sounds fishy to me.

But as I said I'm an old cynic!

Contact DWP for advice as I'm sure employer can't legally pay less than min wage no matter how they calculate it. Also insurance excess is their problem - not employees. I am with you but it is the norm in recovery apparently. I need to check it is below minimum wage........ as my figures show different.

They take the 450 irrespective of damage. He was told before he took the job they take every opportunity of stopping the bonus.

Last time 3 days after starting he scratched a corsair wing and got charged the full 450.

Hi, Unfortunately I think the lorry driving game is dead, they wonder why they can't retain or recruit drivers when they treat drivers like that. I'm glad that I'm not in it now. Although KimB has a good job doing something interesting she does appear to be working long hours and not much time for other things, which I'm sure we've all noticed. We as consumers don't help matters when we want the best deal (price) on everything and cheap delivery. It wasn't that long along ago there was a thread about where to get the best deal on roadside recovery because it was too dear. This is the other side of that coin.

Think they can pay him below minimum wage, the way they do it is to have them as self employed so they can pay what they like so worth checking on this.

They operate the same scam around the country.

Tell him to get onto the agency's as you choose when to work and it pays well.
The bug money earners in driving are the car transporters and cross continental guys but they tend to go for very experienced drivers who don't mind a week out in the the bunk bed.
Most hgv driving schools allow the cost of the course to be paid over a year or so once you've past, surely he can afford circa £150 a month once he's got a class 1.
