Hi guys, can you give me any recomendations for metal cutting bandsaws that can deal with 5 mm copper plate without crapping themselves in the process.

I should add this is a vertical bandsaw I am after, I already have a horizontal machine from axminster

I would say a hefty purpose built multispeed metal cutting saw, made by someone like Startrite. Sometimes come up on Ebay, but pretty costly.................new one would be a great deal more though.

Unless I'm missing something like the copper sticking to the blade, which can be rectified with better blades and lubrication, Copper cuts like butter I'd have thought most bandsaws designed for metal would do it with ease.

What vertical bandsaw do you use for cutting metal Dan? Seems very difficult to get a usable one for reasonable money.

Dan is right copper brass and Alu cuts like butter and general cutting power needed is minimal
The concentration should be more dedicated towards the blade type rather than the machine itself.
A slightly coarser tooth is better for those types of metals because as said the teeth can clog up but like with all metal cutting you need to select based on wall thickness too as too coarse will cause it to grab and throw or snap the blade. Harder metals SS etc will require a more industrial type saw as pressure is needed to aid with cutting to avoid work hardening of the material.

I use a portaband in a vertical stand.... blade type is the most important thing.

I don't have a bandsaw but I've used them before. Tend to cut copper with a thin cutting disc made for or suitable for ally.

I have always wondered if its possible to use a wood cutting vertical bandsaw to cut non ferrous metal. Things that seemed to suggest not, was the speed for wood is far higher than what would be ideal for metal, and the blade guides for wood might not cope with the debris that comes from cutting metal.

That's all plain b******s Chris, I've cut bucket loads of non ferrous on a wood saw. It's just like a stickier hardwood.

I have a wood cutting band saw, which I was hoping to use for aluminium. Blade guides look like they would last about 5 minutes though, so enquired about some suitable for metal, and they were £185................

How much of this do you need to Cut? As you know you are local ish to me and i have a vertical in the workshop, you can use it you can tolerate my messy workshop. I can give you all the info you need on metal verticles, first hand trained with them and used all my working life in metal cutting.

Further to Scott's generous offer, I'm also not too far from you, and I have a small (wood) bandsaw that's up for grabs.

The motor maybe shafted, not sure. Brushes perhaps? Worth a punt at £25?

Or swapsies maybe? Or just take the poxy thing away - it's cluttering up my bench!

I've been looking at a metal bandsaw too, just sold some stuff so I could finance the purchase thereof. Milwaukee deep cut bandsaw like this is what I am considering, then build a vertical table for it later. A small one like this is important so I can store it under my welding table:
