well, as the title suggests my girlfriend wanted a go at tig welding.. After all, it was only fair seeing as she took the plunge and bought me a decent DC setup for my birthday..
She has had absolutely no previous welding/fab experience, although she does do autograss racing so isn't your typical girl who's only into handbags and lipstick..
I gave her very little help, merely explained the principals of it; I even let her set the machine up by herself.
Needless to say, I was impressed! Probably a heck of a lot better than the welds I produced the first time I picked up a torch

Fortunately she's well able to drive already, I've seen her do things in cars that would honestly have me want to hang on for dear life.. And that's coming from someone who has done autograss in the past too!

Yep. Go try put some of her eye liner on without jabbing yourself in the eye or drawing all over your lower lids

Always the quiet ones. We had an appo who to be honest couldn't fit her backside to a outhouse pot. We let her have a go on some alu one day for a laugh and she ran a perfect bead :/

I started work in a steelworks (with a fab facility), in 1965 (ancient I know). I was told that during WW2 they recruited 50 lady welders to replace men who had gone to war. They were so good that when the war ended they were the only women that had been to taken on to replace men they kept on.

Well to me from your explanation she is a keeper, as for why a lot of women are better welders it was explained to me most women have a left master eye, where as most men its right, now if you are a clay buster that makes sence, but how it can affect welding,,,beyond me, either way make up your mind before someone else makes a play would be my advice.

Actually that's a tad off more women have central vision but honestly it's actually down to skills already learned such as applying eye make- up
Edit for clarification more have central vision than men have not more have central vision than a dominant eye side

We will agree to dis agree on that, it was more tongue in cheak(?) than actual medical fact, as I stated ,as it was explained to me! Doesnt get away from the fact first time weld d...n good, and from all accounts a keeper.
Would nt really call applying make up as a skill set would you?? unless you are a pro make up artist !!!

It's an individual thing as to how quickly a skill is picked up.
A persons gender is irrelevant.
However the make up thing does hold a bit of truth on principle.
A delicate, accurate, steady hand is a benefit. Someone who paints or draws or a tattoo artist. Some one who ties a lot of small fishing hooks etc all have an ability to keep steady throughout the task. This will be help a lot with tig welding.

I suggest just for the crack you try and learn how to put eye liner on
Don't get me wrong it's not something I do but have seen both my daughters early attempts and how they got it
This is also mirror work. Any welders who have had to learn this for work will tell you it ain't as easy as it looks

Richard years ago on a course I was in among a load of good skilled and practiced welders. The instructor had thier new office girl on the course also ( company policy and a good one I might add) not kidding anyone she was one of the best in the room at the end of the week!
Blokes? We have attitude and tend to learn in different ways than just doing what the experts tell us - you see we "already know" and " it can't possibly be that easy "
The girls just do what you tell them right up until they should / are teaching us

This is the beginning of the end, once you let women realise that they can do man stuff its all over, that happened in the war in the factories, and has taken decades to put right, don't spoil it now lads. Keep pointing out horrific industrial accidents in the paper to the missus, and pretending to be dog tired when you get home, when all you've been doing all day is parking the van up in a lay by and kipping, or playing world of tanks on your office PC.
