Yes that would be no hassle for him will be able to give you advice on anyother areas that maybe off concern
as others have said until you start grinding back and cutting out bits you don't know how bad it's going to be

dont be listening to fibreglassing up holes unless its some banger - you need to do things 100% and just the once

epoxy is instead of etch , do not etch the repair if using epoxy

We all know that filling isn't the right way to do it, but I get the feeling he wants to do a quick fix(bodge) and that's up to him if he wants to do that.

yeah just make it clear to people that xx way is right and xyz isnt ...you see it all the time on forums that folk lap up the advice that such n such rust cure will be ideal to paint on the scabs and make it all better

Thankfully not Steve. The underside, as mentioned previously with was treated underseal. I inspected it today and pleasingly corrosion has not penetrated the metal. The interior rust has not been caused from the underside of the car, its most like a product of poor weather seals which are known for leaking on these second generation F-bodies.

The Deox Gel is working well These photos were taken after the second application and using a wire and flapper wheel.

did you underseal straight onto bare steel ? if so id scrape it off and check it as i discovered a long time ago it rusts underneath it

I didn't underseal the car, a previous owner must have. I did scrape some of it off in a few areas and there's no corrosion thankfully. I think at some point it's probably had the original underseal removed, it doesn't look as old or dirty as it should for a car of it's age.

You could place a good light under the car and go out to it when it;'s dark and turn light on then view from inside to see if there are any pin hole. Have a marker pen to circle them ready to inspect when in daylight.
Can't tell from the pics but if some parts needing treatment are reasonable flat (with no drain holes) it may be possible to make up (with plasticine) an area that you can poor in some citric acid water (note citric acid is also descaler powder) and leave to soak. No more grinding and wire brushing

Bumper bracket left soaking in citric acid solution, light scrub every couple of days.

That doesn't look to bad from the pictures, whats the area like around the seat belt mount? now that you've deoxed it again.

There's one actual hole maybe, but there's significant pitting which WILL have weakened the seatbelt mount.

Why do you have such an aversion to fixing it properly? Did you work on the 'american hotrod' film crew?

I've no aversion to removing metal work that NEEDS removing. The strength is still there, if it wasn't it would be removed. I've hit the area with force via a hammer several times, and there's no apparent deforming.

I could've deformed that section with a hammer the day it came off the production line. (standard 'mechanics' hammer, not toffee or lump.)

Who exactly told you that it hasn't affected the strength? They're talking crap. A good 30% of the metal is missing (through pitting), so it IS weaker.

While the actual question of removing rust is being answered, I'm very disappointed that so few members have taken the context into account.

Oh, and while the MOT says about corrosion, it means the effects of corrosion - simply cleaning the rust off is not an approved repair method.

I've been advised that the metal work is not at a stage where it's necessary to remove it for reasons of structural integrity from diminished strength. Yes, it is not as strong as it was when new but corrosion has not taken it to a point where it's an issue of safety.

This information was given to me by a local bodyshop who's work has never been brought into question and a gentleman who is professional welder who came out to quote on required work to the car elsewhere.

Our project car passed an mot. A couple of months later when we started to strip it, the seat belt mount was very rusty and in a crash may well have snapped, sending the passenger through the windscreen. The mot doesn't inspect it, they just have to test that it's secure enough on the day.

A bit late to the party but I agree with pdg, if it's pitted it's already weakened, as for hitting it with a hammer it's not really a conclusive test !!!
