Car Windscreen

I think I know the answer to this but always worth checking with anyone more up to date then me:

Just noticed a small loop shaped crack in my windscreen at the bottom, no signs of an impact and can't actually feel the crack.

So am I right in assuming it will be a laminated screen (2012 model)?

It may well spread but there is no chance of the screen blowing totally into a million bits as they used to?

Got an airport run tonight so must have the car on the road but don't want it parked up with no windscreen for a week.

My experience with windscreens goes back 30 years when I used to replace them with fairy liquid, a length of string and plenty of cussing.

Yep it's laminated so no chance of it exploding into a gazillion pieces like the toughened ones do (rear and sides), it will creep but no need to worry about it unless it fails the MOT or it impedes your vision within the swept zone of your wipers (something like more than 40mm, a 2p coin?).

'Proper' advice would be to replace it asap.

Times too tight today for a call out so it will have to survive, I am happier with a crack than if it had been a damaged area due to impact...I think that makes sense, well to me it does

I've been driving round with a small crack in my screen for eight years, its right on the edge and looks like a spider, I did take it to one of those free repair men that set up in supermarket car parks but he said it was too close to the edge of the screen for him to fix, its no worse now than it was in 2008.

When I get back I am going to try my warranty cover, still a year left.

There is no impact damage, it's the inside lamination and the area is behind the dash so can't be impacted from inside the car.

I am suspecting it's stress damage due to some fitting issue or body flex which I would argue is a design fault.

They have always been great with any minor issue the car has had so will see if they continue to be great, the garage will of course be delighted to fit one if Hyundai agree it's a fault and pay them.

tHe MOT is max 10mm in the drivers vision. Theres a defined area abover the steering wheel and inside the wiper sweep and its 40mm outside this, but I think it cant extend to the edge of the screen.
Check with your insurance company as you may be covered for a repair

Yeah £50 excess, which is not the end of the world if the warranty refuses the repair.

If you are covered on insurance, if possible wait untill say the last month your insurance runs to, then you will have cover on the "new" windscreen soon as you renew, most wont change two windscreens in a year if you are unlucky.
How ever if its under warranty it should be covered as sounds like a stress fracture from your description.A few pictures and polite but determined letter should sort that I would have thought.Arther

No need to and unnecessary really, if it were a safety red light the MOT would fail for any damage to the screen and the Police would be taking advantage with an easy fine.

Phoned the dealer, had a good chat and described the crack and before I mentioned anything else he stated it sounds likes a stress fracture and as such they will replace it when I want...as long as there is no sign of impact damage....good enough for me

I bought my car nearly 6 years ago with a crack in the screen and it's never got any worse.
I even use hot water to de-ice it too.
