Compo...I had a CB92 when I was 16...managed to over-rev it and it dropped a valve..ended up having to buy a new cylinder head that cost me £24.00 from Bill Head in Preston...I was earning £4 a week!!! But I loved that bike to death...until I got a CB72..now that was a bike in fact that's what I'm looking for now...........

Yep, he's almost finished the work he needed to do on the CBX. The maiden journey is a Scottish road trip. (There and back in the back of the van though as Mum is going too, but she wouldn't be seen dead on a bike lol)

Yes I know the CB92 prices now...I had an original 1963 Honda Monkey Bike in perfect condtion..I sold it for £18.00 ......there is one now on EBay for just under £13,000 .....if only!

Went on a delivery yesterday and took a red CD175, tidy sweet runner to a very nice gentleman down south. He wanted something small to ride as he couldn't drag a big bike round any more. I keep looking at Honda C90 and thinking about getting one for running round on.

I'm considering buying a 50 year old Honda motorbike with the aim of restoring it....used to have the same model when I was 16)

I'm OK with the mechanical bits (as long as I can get the parts) and even the rust removal and paint but not sure best way to clean up old tarnished alloy bits (crankcase etc) and how much re-chroming costs? Also getting wheels rebuilt with new (stainless?) spokes...how expensive??

Anyone with any experience of doing this type of resto give me a thumbs up or not!! I'm semi retired so time isn't the problem.

Got to say you need deep pockets to restore a bike I did a BSA a bit ago took me about 6 years the wife refer to it as the bike in a box

The chroming costs a small country's ransom. I did start keeping receipts for stuff but stopped as the cost went up Im more the sure if I sold it I would not re coupe the money I spent but for me it was all about the resto job I cant say I even like to ride it lol

Have fun doing you resto i learnt a lot of new skills on the BSA rebuild

Stop press....I've bitten the bullet and bought a 1965 CB72 Honda 250cc Dream...this is the bike I had at age 17 and loved it to bits!!

I'm picking it up tomorrow (Friday) and will start a new thread under projects....so come on over and take a look...I think I'll need some help and advice...

I'm looking at Suzuki triples at the moment, GT380 or GT550, the GT750 "kettles" are out of my price range

Stay away from the "water bottle"..i done one years ago and the price of renovation was double the price of a bike in A1 condition

Why restore it just get it running and ride it, all too often bikes just end up sat polished in the garage when they are made to be ridden

because working on them means your not monged out on the couch watching tat on the TV in the winter. polishing a swing arm Versus Eastenders,no brainer is it

I restore older bikes all the time and its a mugs game. So for example an RD350LC can still almost be had for peanuts but you'll be spending the entire potential value to restore it. Pay too much for a fixer-upper and it will become a never ending money pit which will never be worth the amount of time, effort and cash you have to expend.

On the other hand, you might pick up a half finished "project" where some other mug has already taken the hit on costs....

Either way, you really need to be doing it for the love of it.

Is this Mersey speak or have you not woken up properly yet winchman ? We delivered a bike the other day and the recipient had a bike just like the BSA in the pictures above but with Triumph badges.
