Asset tagging

After hearing a few stories where a bloke had died and left loads of tools and gear, his family know little if anything about them or the value. For it to be sold for peanuts.
I've decided, to asset tag all my kit.


So I m looking for a Asset tagging database I can use. Or pointers to a database builder A lefthanded idiot can figure out.

I'd use a plain text editor, just in case your executor is a righthanded idiot.

Or even something like Word so you can add pictures.

Or use Flickr and hide everything from public view. Leave your username & password in your will.

be interested in this as well, been thinking about this for a while in terms of the insurance angle, and the cost of replacement tools welders etc... Have been planning to take an inventory of all the kit, including photographs for the insurance to value them all for them and an agreed value. Could be used for both purposes.

I was just going to use excel and photographs, but it there was a tag register as well it would simplify things.

I'm not being entirely facetious, I would suggest any list of assets needs to be being a physical presence. Because anyone who could be dealing with it needs it to be easily accessable without going wading through all your por...files on the computer. That's not to say you can't create a simple file on there but print it off as well.

That's all the least of my worries considering the rest of the assets in the property etc as it will be for many of us

Very true, Colin. but it hard/hassel to keep upto date.

My intention was to keep a hard copy in my personal file, my wife does my accounts so she'd know where it was.

I've a label printer, to mark the items, for easy of ref.

A pc based prog, would be the easiest; building wise, but I'd rather have it on either my ipad or andriod tablet

Why not just use a three column spreadsheet? Doesn't matter what software you use for something that simple. Sequential numbering in column one, price in column two and a brief description in column three. Simple to print out or write a correspondingly numbered label for each item.

Write the estimated value on the side of each of your bits with permenant marker? Pretty foolproof

Thats what I use for stuff that isn’t easily identified for someone not in the know.

Can be read by lots of different software and a printout in the fire safe.

I do keep it version controlled and dated and I suppose in the event of a total loss it might be handy for insurance purposes.

My thought as well. The label printer can print bar codes, it might help in the event.

Come to think of it, I used to have a program that would write barcodes with data from a database.

Maybe that would be a better solution. Anyone with a phone could read the barcode with a simple barcode reader s/w.

And the database would collate all the data. Ace

So a simple excel shread sheet will do, I can then import to the printer s/w to print a label with a barcode and a few details, on how to use.

You can do a very simple barcode output by installing a font, say code 39. You then just print whatever you want and it's a barcode.

Do the bit in bold in the font (with asterisks, it's needed for the code).

Lots and lots and lots of barcode styles to choose from but 39 / 3 of 9 is very basic and reliable at the sacrifice of information density.

Excel would do it and you can add pictures or link to second spreadsheet with pictures

Look on the bright side. That's money your wife could have otherwise been spending on tat. Better to have something to see for your money rather than just peeing it away up the wall, as my MIL used to say, and you obviously have kit in your workshop to show for it.
