Why not try Linux? If it works then your problem sorted FOC, if not you probably have hardware issues.
How can it be sorted when i have lots of time and money invested in windows programs?
I did have one......for my note 3 but at 6.99 1.8 metre and braided I grabbed one anyway. A new external USB 3.0 sat casing and power supply and files are being saved as we speak.

If it works with Linux you have software problem, if it doesnt you have hardware problem. If your machine is configured to boot from CD/USB drive, you can see if it will work using a copy of Puppy on CD or USB. Pretty simple to do, and will only take 10 minutes as soon as you have a copy of Puppy.
Copying files from a windows drive. My computer shows 80 gig free out of 440 GB BUT when I select all on the drive it says 182 GB (196,128,563,058 bytes)
after copying them all across is says. 80.5 GB (86,496,251,895 bytes)
So not only am I unable to select all the files on the hard drive to copy it also does not transfer all of those I do select.
My brain is getting frazzled and I am really starting to hate getting old.

Try running CCleaner (Crap Cleaner) which is a freeware program. It deletes all the temporary files etc you can't see that still use up HDD space. I gained almost another 50% space on my HDD which was previously "full to the brim".
I sussed one of the problems . I always knew file sizes and disc capacity were miles out and we're down to temp files and windows bCk ups restore points etc that just don't even show up when unhidng windows hidden files.
But this was seeing almost twice as much as it was copying and I really wanted to know what it was not copying. Turns out it was documents and setting folder not copying due to permissions as it's a pulled drive........still trying to work out how to change permissions as I already was logged on as amin and still can't even see the files in there let alone copy them.

I tried this procedure but still get some errors...
In Explorer, right click the drive in question and select Properties
On the Security tab click Advanced
On the Owner tab
Select your account if it isn't already and
Check "Replace owner on subcontainers and objects"
Click OK twice (close all dialogs)
That sets you as owner of every folder and file on the drive

Click Apply
Click Advanced

I think we need to revisit what you're trying to do.
You won't (realistically) be able to copy all files, programs, settings, etc. off the disk and you definitely won't be able to create an exact copy of the disk using standard Windows copy.
If you're just looking for a belt-and-braces "let's get as much of my documents as possible off the disk" then the approach you referred to in your most recent post is the quickest way to achieve that (although there are more targeted approaches that will copy less data).
Can you tell us what exactly you're looking to get off the disk? Just documents / drawings, or program installs (next to impossible) or Windows product keys, etc?

have you also been into computer management and looked at disc management to see what is actually there ?
i must be the odd one out again, the garage and home laptops got swaped over, the new laptop with all the prossesing grunt is the one i use in the garage.
but it quite often ends up running virtual machens, to run the software to beat up various ecu's and the laptop i bought to do that job just din't have enough grunt but it was happy enough trundeling round the tinternet

LOl yes I do jump around a bit its due to the grandson and wife needing controlling..
I managed to get them both asleep and my new computer are warm enough to work in comfortably.Took a big swig and settled down to do just what you asked above. I am just wanting to get ANYTHING I can of my laptop to make sure I dont loose something I can save.
One issue I had was I have a number of programs than can only be installed once. (free from a deal cant remember the name. They also have % of other products) Not many I use but you know what its like loose it and you need to use it.
I am planning on getting all the files off and then a system restore to factory as I have 5 discs BUT Toshiba tell me its also on the hard drive under toshiba tools.
I was concerned about getting it working again as I forgot about produ key.
Now I have saved all keys on my laptop I am happy. Once I have copied all the files I can I will put the drive back into my Toshiba laptop. Currently its in a USB 3.0 caddy.
I now have a CD with Puppy on it and will check my hardware........
Then I can do my reinstall. I will also have to re grease the video chip and cpu as its overheating badly.
In case you are all a bit confused I also have another laptop an aspire which I was going to use for mach 3 but a mate gave be a registered copy of Mach3 and a computer with it all running.
So thats going to have a fresh install...BUT I was not aware it was originally Vista 64 bit and had been upgraded to Windows 7 ultimate. (My Toshiba has home premium on it.)Anyway I Also have my sons mates Aspire (another one) which he used for vehicle diagnostics and its that one I would like to get running with its original OS. That said I think I have found the key file and saved it so I think even that one can be a reinstall but taking it all slowly.
Scotl has offered remote assistance but is not available for a while so I am just cracking on slowly. I am not a novice but once you stop something for a while its not like riding a bike things change very quickly and you need to get back up to speed. I need promoting and reading is good for me..jogs my memory etc.

This is the drive map from my main PC with other drives attached
,Disk 5 is actually the Drive from my Toshiba laptop. SO it all looks intact but while the OS seems to run the screen only shows a mouse.
I will know more tomorrow after I run puppy on it and see if screen is fine. I think it is but something weird has gone on with it. The mouse seems to think another display is attached as it just runs of the screen to the right.
But ironically thats the one key that works and I can add or delete additional monitors and projectors. so thats why it got me stumped....annoyed more than anything.

why does it have HP tools on a Toshiba ?
OMG thick as pig poop. lol Its actually an HP pavillion with a Toshiba harddrive that came fitted when new....I just saw toshiba on the screen shot and went with the flow...just my typing mistake mate.
Its actually the only laptop I have ever brought new and I will never buy another one new...
So the real question is why does an HP laptop have a toshiba hard drive in it...
and when will a 1TB solid state be available cheap.

if your screen shows a mouse pointer then its working fine have you tried the FN key with F5 or which ever swaps the screen
