d drive infinitely variable geared transmission

It looks like it's pretty efficient, but the big points made about being able to handle any amount of power seem unimportant. Vario transmissions have been in use on tractors for some time now (using hundreds of horsepower) and as I recall use hydraulics to slow down an epicyclic gear system to control the speed. It's truly variable and seems fairly reliable.

haveing seen a fendt 936 pull a lorry with a broken halfshaft up a hill i can understand why people like them, even tho tractor had less power than the lorry and had to pull off from standing on the hill it crossed the top going faster than the lorry would have under it's own power. being abel to use ALL the power ALL the time makes incredible differance

I have a massey ferguson tractor with the fendt vario transmission in
I would struggle to go back to a conventional geared tractor now
There are various controls to utilise the best from the machine so the tractor is constantly working 100% at the touch of a button
There is no way you could drive a conventional tractor all day to the same leval of efficiency

It is but the hydraulics control the planet and ring gears to vary the speeds
The power still travels through gears shafts

Looks like a standard differential to me. They haven't solved the problem of a friction plate or brake, merely moved it to an electric motor.

It's the same gearing solution as a differential and they effectively lift up one wheel and drive it with a separate electric motor. The limiting factor therefore is the strength of that motor and its ability to either drive or brake the system. Not only that but if he has to drive one shaft to produce an "infinitely variable gear", he's going to need an infinitely variable motor to drive it!

I doubt if anyone's going to get rich off that. There's no way he's gonna get a patent anyway.

Several people have beaten me to it! I used to work for them some years ago and was there when this was introduced. That video doesn't do it justice but if you google Fendt vario there are some good schematics. It gets even more interesting, because having gone infinitely variable, then then chucked a computer at it so the operator can set it to maintain a set rpm at the engine, ideal for PTO work, a set forward speed, adjusting the transmission as necessary, or a set torque, perfect for ploughing. As someone said, it handles hundreds of horsepower, yet is surprisingly small when you see it. It doesn't need a spare battery either...

Not as simple as that. It's not a hydrostatic drive. It drives its own pump and varies its output to control the epicyclics, so is still essentially a mechanical drive.

Anyone else remember seeing CVT for bicycles on Tomorrow's World...? Never heard any more about it.
The main chainring was replaced by a disc carrying several small sprockets that were spring-loaded radially so with no load (ie not pedalling) they were forced to the perimeter of the disc. Once under way, as you loaded up by trying to accelerate or go uphill, the sprockets would compress their springs, reducing the effective diameter of the 'chainring' in the same way as dropping chainrings would. As the load reduced the sprockets moved back outwards, in effect changing up.
Probably answered a question that nobody asked and added 10Kg to the weight of a 10 Kg bike, but clever nonetheless
