what gasket material?

im not happy using the liquid gasket options, i have used them before for this application but everytime i have to re-visit the area i have to destroy the gasket and then clean teh mating faces etc.

so i want a gasket material so i can make up a handfull at a time and store them for later use.

the area i need the gasket is on the valve cover on the megane. the cover itself is fine, but there is a section that unbolts and lifts off, and although there was no factory fitted gasket there, i am having problems with it leaking oil on the back side, so used loctite gasket a few times, but everytime i have a problem that requires removing this panel the gasket is ruined (how many of you said that like stewie does?)

thinking of using thick gasket paper, but need to know if it is oil and heat resistant (not massive heat as its only a valve cover) before i buy and make some.

before anyone says anything, i cant find out why it is leaking, i have tried a new panel to rule that out but its still the same, i have checked the mating faces for defects and for flatness, cant find any crakcs etc but it still leaks oil (not a great amount at a time but its running down onto the hot exhasut manifold and then coming in through the vents), so a gasket seems to be the way forward.

do Renault use a sealer here in the factory, if so I would try to get that.

not on this part they dont. the first time i took it off (to put helicoils in 2 of the 8 or so mounting holes) there was no gasket material at all. the mating surfaces look milled, although they have a good finish, can barely feel the milling grooves with my thumbnail. i thought it was leaking due to the damaged threads but after replacing the threads and torquing it down it still leaked (not around the repaired bolt holes) and i have been chasing it for a while.

Have you tried using the RTV on the cover, greasing the mating surface slightly & then placing the cover in place, but not cleaning the grease off & screwing it down tight until the silicone has gone off. This makes like a permanent gasket on the cover that doesn't stick down.

havent tried that, i have some cv joint grease here somewhere if that will work.

Can't you just get a sheet of Viton and cut the shape out you need.

You can buy proper gasket paper by the metre designed exactly for this. Rubberflex or rubbernoid or something the last batch I bought was branded. Its on ebay if you search under gasket paper.

You can get it off ebay in different thickness. .think this one is just over 1mm...I got the wad punch from machine mart ...I done heaps of gaskets with this...

its a sheet of gasket material i am looking for. i have made a few before using the dirty finger and ball bearing method to mark out and cut the holes, just didnt know if all gasket paper was oil resistent

When you removed the bolts did the plate just fall off or was it hardish to remove? The reason i ask is the opd ford split case 6 and 8 speed transmissions have a jointing surface like you describe.

it wasnt difficult to get off, cant really remember as its been on and off so many times but i cant remember having to 'pop' it off

Can we go back a bit? You say it was not fitted with a gasket from the factory and it did not leak from new (I assume) have you checked for blocked crankcase breather (s) or has it got worn piston rings. Blocked breathers = cheap fix, worn rings = get some gasket paper.
