Procedure for spary painting old plastic bumpers ..

Another one for all you paint people. I have a set of bumpers on my 1991 mk2 vw polo that have faded quite bad , in the pasted I have used boiled linseed oil with good results but now I would like to spray them back same as car..

So hit me with your advice please on procedure and paint process and paint brand.

Im going to assume its faded plastic and not faded paint and its textured finish???

next question. bear with me as its not straight forward. is the body colour you want to use solid or metalic and do you want a shiny finish??

its solid , shiny finish yes but no to shiny as it will look funny as rest of car is not shiny..

ok well not too shiny is acheived by adding matting compound to the top coat..
final question. do you want a flat finish or textured??

Well I don't really want to make the effort to sand down the textured finish so textured be fine..

By the way I do not have the gear for 2k paint unless it is iso free

gtechniq c4 does a good job at restoring old trim for a semi permanent job.

ok 2 choices. Easy choice is to wash with soap and water and brush on some plasticote trim dye available in a few colours. This works very well to revitalise discoloured and faded plastic trim. Second choice we're dealing with celly direct gloss if you want to spray it but i cant really advise on it as ive not used it in many years and am out of touch.
This is what i did to my Nova GTE bumpers to put them into body colour but all in 2k. In celly you could possibly use the same method but its obviously not as good.
The bumpers were only available in textured finish
Good scrub with soap and water
Dried then scrubbed with red scotchbrite and panel wipe
Wiped with clean panel wipe and dried
A coat of plastic primer
3 coats of high build primer
When dry, guide coat and flat 800 to clean finish, if you cant flat the guide out re coat with high build and guide/flat to finish.
Top coat.

cellly isnt really ideal for flexible bumpers

whatever you do degrease it alot

Wurth do a bumper dye as well as Plasticote. Maybe a lot less effort than painting.

we used that in the bodyshop to tidy up sales cars etc , its pretty good and a convincing texture

I cant advise on the others as ive not used them however. Wurth products are always very good.
Given its the same price as the stuff Ive used, id bet its the same gear.

trouble is ive found the vw bumpers arent jet black so as the dye wears off it looks rank
