Am i getting the right welder for the job?

If you whap too much current through it, itll get hot, it will shorten its life, but wont do any harm in the short term. Just my opinion, no garuntee.

I quite often put too much through my nice light cheap chinese tig torch, instead of swapping to the bigger one.

Hot dipped galv I have never seen rubbed off! Don't know what you are getting and yes quality has slipped with it but rubbing off? In such a short time? No that's indicating another issue imo

Ay up chap... If u look back somewhere above there are two pics... 1 is a throgh, u can see inside it where the galv has gone.. But I'm not sure if that's rubbed off or weather galv doesn't agree with sialage effulent... The second is a galv round straw tumbrel, that's got to have rubbed off where there heads go in and out...

I'll try and get a pic up of what I call old and new galv... I don't know if there is any difference or not, just know the new stuff doesn't last...

Got my gas ordered... Should be here later today... I hired the bottle for £3.50 a month with a £14 refill fee....
Sparkie came last sat to check electrics... Where my 16amp socket is currently, has a 6mil wire feed and the fuse board is 32 amp... So it's just a case of new sockets in the wall, and switch the fuses... He's meant to be here tomorrow... So hopefully I'll be playing with welder on sat...

Perhaps its not even been dipped, it could be that galvafroid paint on stuff claiming to be dipped?

That's possibly a very good price on the gas, what size and from where?

The machine should be decent too, did the refurbishers give you any warranty?

Ay up, er the gas is the biggest bottle, but i havent a clue where its coming from, i belong to an agricultural buying group, i get everything from fuel, chemicals, fertilizer etc from them.... it saves me ringing around, they do all that for you and send u the best deal, or they have discounts already set up with companies.... it was free delivery too...

the company i bought the welder from ( fastark ) were really good, there was a huge selection of various machines in stock stacked to the ceiling... first we picked the machine to suit my needs, then they set it all up and went through it all with me.. then we did some test welds and had about 40mins with me showing me some tips and techniques...

they have a small selection of what they sell, on ebay... so i knew i could haggle out the ebay fees, paypall etc.... it was £950 +vat, haggled him down to £800 +vat with the dearer parker torch, a reel of wire, spare tips etc and that black plastic case to conseal the wire... but anyway to answer your question there is 6 months warranty with it

The galvanised sheet in your trough is not hot dipped. I believe it is more along the lines of electro-plated with zinc.

The cattle will indeed rub the galv on the ring feeder, the uprights on your shed etc but should take many years to start rusting unless it is left in manure/rotting silage all year - silage seep seems to eat through anything over time.

Most farm gates now by the likes of IAE are produced to a price, not quality. IAE is pretty poor but alot better than Agritubel products that don't even last one winter in a cattle shed without welds busting and tube bending.

Sounds like you know what your talking about... U must be a farmer to know those brands.... The stuff we buy is either IAE or Bateman...
As for weather that trough is galv or zinc I really haven't got a clue,... I've some brand new sheets in the shed I made it from, I'll take a closer pic of the new

I'm very possibly talking out my ****... I said earlier I'll try and find what I call old galv and new galv... The first pic is what I call old galv, it has a really gritty texture, quite dull, and no pattern to it... But if u chip into its really thick, like over 1 mill...
Second pic is what I call new galv, it's smooth, shiney, patterned and really thinly applied... Never lasts...

Not a farmer...I just sort alot of agricultural stuff for my farmer friend. They have Agritubel feed barriers and they are falling to bits after less than 18 months.

Bateman stuff seems good. They have some heavy duty sheeted gates on their midden.

The best barriers I have seen are Jourdain - very well made and extremely well priced and cheaper than the IAE copies!

It's galv sheet (zinc is the metal used in galvanising) but I reckon if it was hot dipped the sheet would no longer be flat.

Someone with more knowledge of the process of making galv sheet would be able to explain the difference better.

The roughness you speak of on "old" galv is just the weathering of the zinc galv layer.

I know what he means by old and new galvanizing.

Back in the aerly 80s I built a power boat trailer. Was really proud of it. Took it down to teeside to have it blasted and galvanized. Took it there myself, unbolted indespensions and tow hitch.

When i picked it up after blasting various puckling then galvanizing it had a rough almost sandpaper finish. About a month ago, i bought a gate, finish is fairly smooth.

The finish on galv really depends on how good the operatives at the galv plant are when dipping the items into the zinc. Good galv plants will continually remove the slag off the top of the zinc as the item is being slowly removed from the tank and use an air line to blow off any excess whilst still "molten".

I also believe that the thickness of the metal used in the item makes a difference during the hot dip galv process.

like i say i dont know about galv, all i know is whats 30 years of age plus, was a much much much better all round product than what i can buy now..

I had never heard of them until 2 weeks ago. Currently repairing/modifying IAE yoke barriers to fit 20 ft bays in a new shed for a local farmer. He has installed Jourdain yoke barriers in the new area. Very well made and designed - far superior to IAE and only £500 per 20 ft barrier. No way I could even make half of that for 500 quid!
