Dormer A002 Drills

I have a question for any of you that have a set of these. Can you please look at the 3.2mm or 1/8" drill and tell me if there are any markings on it? Here's why.

I bought a box of 10 of these on ebay, arrived today & I'm not happy.

First of all there were only 9 in the box, not 10.

Secondly, one of the 9 has been used - they were advertised as new!

The cutting edge is chipped and there is a mixture of grease & swarf in the flutes!

But worst of all I suspect they are cheap Chinese copies. There is no writing at all on the drill, either size or make. They just don't feel right either, not what a quality drill should feel like. I don't like the way the cutting edge has chipped on that drill but very little evidence of use otherwise. I suspect they are very brittle and will snap easily.

I have messaged the seller demanding a refund, stating the above and including these pics. I have also requested that he pay the return postage. Can I do this, especially since I suspect counterfeit goods? He has a 99% feedback rating so I suspect he wasn't aware what he was selling. He seems to deal in clearance stock so may have been caught out himself.

Yes, Dormer drills always have their name and type on the end of the shank. The coating doesn't come that far from the tip.

That's what I thought. In 30+ years I've yet to see a decent drill that hasn't got a make & size on it.

I don't think you should have any problem getting a full refund, apart from being one drill short, and the evidence that at least one drill had been used, this constitutes items not as described, so your complaint is justified.

Have any of you found a source for quality drill bits at a sensible price, prefer ebay but any contacts welcome. I'm well stocked for most sizes, just the small sizes from 1/16" to 9/64" I need. That's the really small ones are near impossible to sharpen and easy to break. Out of 3 full sets I've 1 complete set left!

If you start a return through eBay then it will allow you to print out a prepaid postage label at his expense.

Got a full refund instantly and told me to scrap the drills. I'll try one out later but I suspect they will be rubbish.

Genuine Dormer drills would be my first choice, but rated highly are Guhring drills, these are high quality drills made in Germany, there are some on ebay.

I use my local fastener shop for drills. Sometimes online is worse than retail.

Where are you Turbo? I can recommend a supplier in Somerset but he doesn't do mail order.

I tend to use MSC for odds and ends like this these days... some of their special offer stuff is really good value for decent and half decent kit

My Dormers are an old set, I have an odd pack of small sizes there were 10 in a pack, all drills are engraved / marked dormer, and with the size.
sorry pics are rubbish but i just cant get the small sizes onto the camers, this is a 3/16 one. If tyou click on the pic you may just see the engraving.
Every thing else I have that might be Dormer, taps, dies, milling cutters etc are all marked and engraved Dormer. Even little BA stuff.

Not sure how this helps but I just had a look at the pack of 2mm Dormer bits I have. In little red box of 5 (unopened when I was given them) they have the TiN coating on the fluting but not the shank and have split points:

There are absolutely no markings on any of the bits though - If I didn't know where they come from (a Uni machine shop) I might have considered they could be counterfeit but I'd be confident they are genuine - just looking at them they scream quality and of course perform very well.

A002's are not engraved, it's sort of printed on in black letters, well real ones are

I was buying sherwood from the irish version of cromwell, you can see what you are buying and they seem to be reasonably priced for uk made drills.

I have a pack of them, I can without a doubt say they are genuine dormer and mine aren't marked either, I think they're just too small for it to be practical
