What paint for external wall?

Apologies that this isn't metal or welding related!

I painted this wall last summer with generic Wickes masonry paint, but the paint became covered with moss over the winter and started to flake off.
That picture is after I jet-washed the wall down. The rear wall has 5ft of earth behind it so I'm guessing it leached through that wall more than the wall to the right.

Can anyone recommend a (preferably sprayable) masonry paint that has some kind of moss inhibitor?
Or was it simply down to lack of preparation?

most likely water / damp penetrating through from the ground at the back I recon, unless its tanked. Moss of course needs moisture to grow and survive.

I agree. Is there a paint that would resist, do you think?

Pliolite based might be best ... Water based will not like moisture behind it

Leyland truguard Pliolite would be my choice but with damp behind can't say if it will be any better. My guess is it will be

Not convinced with the flag!

We had actually intended some wall plants but the concrete floor extends 2ft from the wall so nothing apart from grass will root.

That looks good stuff. I see that the datasheet still recommends lichen be treated with a "Sterilisation Wash".

Frankly no because saltpetre as well as moisture etc will only form behind the paint. I wonder if you could use tanking slurry on the wall face you can see then paint it?

realy the wall wants treating with anti sulphate to kill the ground salts that have penetrated through then coating with a solution of 8 parts water and 1 part sbr bonding agent and add cement , mix to a paste and paint on . then buy tanking slurry powder. mix 2 part water to 2 parts sbr bonding agent and add the tanking powder and mix to a runny paste and paint on .when dry paint with whatever u like and it will never come off or get damp

Yikes! That sounds way more involved than I'd been expecting.

So, I'll apply the stuff I just ordered from Amazon, then re-post the exact same question this time next year, and you can point me to this post while playing the "I told you so!" card

not at all it depends on what u want to spend and how far u go .the rolls royce or the mini . u get what u pay for

It's a retaining wall . No dpc and facing brick. I would just accept that it was never designed to be painted and hold paint.
So you will be painting it yearly, now that the painting is on I think. An hour with the roller Scott. Was it painted to cover spalted brick?

It's like roughcasting garden walls with no dpc..........no good, might stay on might not. Even strong bonding agents can just pull another layer of brick skin off. Oh the fun of it all.........I do not miss

Aye, you're both right! That's why I was looking for sprayable paint (which is what I've ordered). At least if I have to do it every year it should only take 30 minutes!

think you need an airless sprayer for it...

The tech sheet said "conventional or airless spraying". I'll double check before I start, tho - it's not the Great Wall of China so slapping it on (probably) won't kill me

Cover it with fencing panels...will be a lot softer to the eyes and more in keeping with the garden
