I see a lot of welders in with various faults, most are straightforward and many have the following problem, badly made connections that get hot after they go loose or were poorly made to begin with and overheat and melt the cable.
Here's how I was taught to make up leads years ago and I've never had a connection fail me yet.
Most important, get the rubber boot on first!
This is 35mm2 cable, it doesn't fill a 35/50 Dinze connector very well at all, so I take the following steps.
Use the ferrule as a guide and cut the insulation back to two times the length of the ferrule.
Then carefully select about a third of a bundle of strands and double them back like so.
Then carry on and do the same all the way around the cable...
Then snip off the excess...

Then compress the folded strands between your fingers and slide on the ferrule carefully trying to avoid leaving loose strands, this will pack out the ferrule nicely and make for a very secure joint.
