Concrete garage floor replacement

Hi folks

Im considering having my garage floor replaced due to the current floor being uneven and it isn't insulated, I have condensation forming on the floor as well.

Can anyone give a rough price for removing the existing concrete floor and installing anew insulated concrete floor with a power floated finish? The floor area is about 75 square metres and 125mm thick. Im in Fife, Scotland if that makes much of a difference?

Yes its actually a little bit less, I calculated it at 9.4m3 of concrete that will be needed.

No expert knowledge but it strikes me that that you may need to either dig deeper or raise the floor if you are to incorporate a decent layer of insulation and still have a floor strong enough to put up with workshop trafic.

Yes it will need to be dug deeper to accommodate the insulation, cant really afford to loose the headroom so raising the floor level isnt an option.

get a price for skips needed for removal of waste concrete . hire of a breaker . price of celotex insulation and readymix concrete a square m weldmesh if u want to ad it hire of powerfloat work out who u can get to help or do the job and there hourly rate or get a local builder to price and there u have it

I'd use extruded polystyrene (XPS) as insulation rather than Celotex. It has a slightly lower insulation value, but is the recommended insulation for fitment under workshop type floors. There are different compressive strengths available depending on the weight you'll be loading it with. Here's a link to the Knauf Polyfoam offering:

Cheers guys. Not sure if I'm keen to power float it myself, or break up the existing slab mainly due to time constraints, so will probably be calling in a local builder to have a look at the job.

Cheers mrfuzzy. I plan on having some machinery in there, probably a bridgeport mill, a lathe and a car scissor lift, the lift with a car on would probably be the heaviest load the floor would see. The current floor has dpm underneath and a coating of epoxy paint on the surface. If I put a new floor in I want to add UFH pipework too, and have the floor as flat & level as possible.

£90+vat for ready mix C35 (strong mix) with reinforcing fibres delivered. A maximum of 8 m3 on a load.
Can't see the point in going thicker than 150mm unless your going to install a nuclear reactor!

Whilst you say the heaviest item on the floor would be a car but the Bridgeport would be the heaviest thing in the smallest footprint, personally I'd save your money and get some heating in there

Yes per m3 for a full load, either 6m3 or 8m3 from Morris concrete in the South West, got a quote last month for my new barn.
They are very competitive as they are right next door to Arc and there is a battle for the custom at the moment.

hope u mark out where your car lift goes 1st to where your underfloor heating pipes will be or is it russian roulette

its not that. its where u drill and bolt it down

More with drilling the mounting points in the floor.

Ahh, its one of the mobile type ones, doesnt need bolting down.

If you don't have the 6" or whatever would be needed to lay a new floor over the existing due to height restrictions then how are you going to have a car lift - surely that will mean car hits roof ?

I'll tell you what I did...

I had to dig into the hill side to get a level base to build my garage, so I get a lot of water coming out of the hill side after it's been raining. So prior to pouring my concrete base I installed a field drain all the way around the outside of the garage and the water was draining from the garage base for days.

So now when it rains my field drain keeps my garage floor perfectly dry. It's never ever been damp in there. Mind you my field drain is shifting up to 100 Tons of water a day away from my garage (sad I know but I timed/measured the flow). The longest it ever ran for was 6 weeks after it had stopped raining

It's a mid rise scissor lift, and floor to joist height is about 2.5m so its doable, but not ideal.

It's not damp that is the main issue, its the fact that floor isnt flat or level although the condensation is a pain, I can sort that out without replacing the floor. Recently I made a decision that I would stay in the house I am in, and that I would spend a little money improving the workshop that I have, hence looking into the floor work.
