Keeping cats out of a garden?

I've got less feeders here than the old house, the blackbirds generally pick the scraps off the floor here and in the last place

They are all in one spot, attached to a tree in the garden with a hedge behind for a nice out of focus background

Just need a dry day to get the camera out, saw a lovely pair of tits earlier but it was ******* down so couldn't get the camera out

Everyone on this forum is an engineer of some sort or other.
As a group, engineers are less likely to understand "can't" than most. They (we) are solution based.

To say that its impossible for a cat owner to stop their cat ****ting in my garden is, as we all know, a lie.

Its not a matter of impossibility at all. Its not a matter of "you can't train cats like you can dogs" or any such nonsense. Its a simple case that the average cat owner can not be bothered to engineer their immediate environment so as their cat stays within their land. It really is that simple.

If youre a cat owner in a town, which is where the issues occur, then its possible for you to fence your garden so as your cat stays in YOUR garden.
The only reason why it leaves your plot is that you cant be bothered to engineer a solution, and / or think its ok for me to clear up after YOUR pet.

In my mind, its a simple issue of responsibility, not one of how well you can, or cant train your average cat.

maybe the real issue is what the cat is worth money wise, i bet you dont see many cats that are worth a bob or two just roaming around, these owners would most likely try there best to keep the animal on their property

Apart from what your suggesting being illegal and immoral don't forget that what is an irritant to you is most probably someone's treasured pet!

The law aside, if you put dye on a cat I owned, I wouldn't be very happy. To put it mildly.

I think you misunderstand me - that would be the idea. It would, i hope, promote you consider what your cat gets up to, and where it goes, a little more than you would usually do.

I have no gripe with the cat. I doubt it cares what colour it is, and i would not like to see it come to halm. It may make you consider responsible cat ownership, however.

Or you may just get angry. Who knows.

Seems alittle random but orange peel scattered around the bird feeder will work. I do the same in my garden

I over heard nextdoor proudly informing her friend she'd just bought another cat, as she didn't like birds.

She doesn't mind it doing the toilet in my planter either, not caught yet, but the day will come...

As some of you may have noticed I like photography, and this year I've set up some bird feeders and a table in the hope of some nice shots in the summer,

However it has attracted the attention of a couple of local cats, and due to the feeders being low ish the cat(s) are scaring the birds off

Any non lethal effective methods of keeping them away? the dog will chase them off but I'm not home to let him out all the time

Mrs Kayos has already said no to an air rifle or a sack with a brick inside, so must be non lethal

You need to go to the zoo and ask for some lion sh*t,and put it in the corners of the garden.....it sorts the men from the boys if ya catch me drift.

You know its a quite a simple matter how the cats are getting in and rectifying their entrance somewhat to stop em coming over the garden.

I never used to get the local tom and flash mary in my back garden when the old fence was up,now the new fence is up the flash mary is sporting her wares to the local tom because they have the freedom to walk along a flat unobstructed fence top.

My cats roam the street, and the neighbours gardens - they are however, trained well enough that they don't chase the birds next door at my neighbours (who feeds them as he enjoys painting the little winged devils - probably why my car is covered in bird **** 24/7), and they don't mess outside, they'll actually come back in to use the litter tray and then go back out.
However, keeping them in the garden is pretty much impossible. If they want to go, short of installing an airlock and netting the whole garden over, then they're going.

I told my neighbour off for feeding birds,simply because its illegal in a built up area and if it attracts seagulls,which its what he is doing, as I live not too far from the dock area.

Cats I can't stand the things, I have to check the grass in my own garden before I let my grandchildren play in the garden should I have to do this when I don't own a cat ?, no if people want cats put a collar on them and a lead long enough to let them roam around their own garden

my cat scarer stands or sits on chair looking out of the bedroom window . when he sees them he comes down and winces pretending to want out for a pee. theres a hole ive cut in the fence to the field he can go through . then he launches his attack ive never seen a cat jump so high in me life .they rarely hang around now andif they do run the gauntlet .sometimes it ends up in a stand off and will square up if the cats cornered . both know whats in store for them if they give in i have to go fetch him away

if you can watch and find a pattern to where they walk you could try the anti climb paint that stays wet , owner might think twice once its trod it all through their house

I own a cat and have had dogs in the past (and probably will do again)but have no specific axe to grind with either cats or dogs, however from a completely neutral point of view dog carp is a massive problem around here. I've lost count of the number of times I or my daughter has stepped in it and then trod it through the house.
