Keeping cats out of a garden?

As some of you may have noticed I like photography, and this year I've set up some bird feeders and a table in the hope of some nice shots in the summer,

However it has attracted the attention of a couple of local cats, and due to the feeders being low ish the cat(s) are scaring the birds off

Any non lethal effective methods of keeping them away? the dog will chase them off but I'm not home to let him out all the time

Mrs Kayos has already said no to an air rifle or a sack with a brick inside, so must be non lethal

Newspaper soaked in creosote and hung round the garden in women's tights used to work, hard to get "real" creosote nowadays. The newer creosote might work but I don't know. Other than that you could try shooting them with a super soaker.

Cats in your garden are a massive pain. There are spiky plastic strips that you can affix to the top of your fence panels which can deter them.

Super soaker sounds fun my dad was an old skool landscape gardener, will ask if he has any proper creosote

The garden is quite big, with various different fences, hedges, walls and buildings on the perimeter, so would be impossible to use the spiky strips

I tend to use the water pistol on them, although I have used the garden hose several times and the cats that got soaked with that have never been back.

My Aunt's neighbour was a very keen gardener and hated cats, he was a crack shot with a catapult

Why's the dog scared if going in the garden! !

Good soaking, only predator I get is the buzzard now.

Can't do catapult (Mrs Kayos again) but soaking seems to be a good contender, I've heard of the big cat poo before, nearest zoo is a decent drive away.

I may put some pepper around the edges of the garden, I can see where one of them comes in, buried a dog toy in front of it, the dog won't dig it up but he will keep going over and looking

What sort of dog do you have? My springer see cats the same as rabbits and puffy fashion dogs, they all need there neck snapping and bringing back to the boss.

Urinate around the perimeter of your garden and at all entry points (yes, your own pee). Works a treat.

The dog is a whippet (as a yorkshire man, what else?) however once he's had his 30 sec exercise burst he spends the rest of the day sleeping, plus as said above non lethal only in afraid, the boss doesn't like it

Need the warmth???? If the heating goes below tropical he comes in looking like an audition for an RSPCA advert

When it's sunny he follows the sunlight across the hallway, about as much movement as he does all day

You can get something called a Scarecrow, its connected to a garden hose and has a movement sensor on it, it also moves left and right to cover a large area.
The cats hate it! Just don't forget it and walk in front of it.....
