opinions please to the building up of this casting

I want to get this built up flush with the rest of the casting it is a cylinder block but i am concerned about building up to much heat and distortion.
I have an old BOC ADR 300 so it has the power if you think it is doable what amps and tungsten would you recommend at the lowest point it is 3/4"

could you not machine it down till you almost lose the angle then just make a spacer up the same shape, it looks like you have enough depth to get away with it.

Looked at that. the rest of it is to shallow to machine flat it will go through into the oil gallery. if i am to make a plate to repair it i may as well do it with no machining. I am still looking at options hence the post so i can decide the way to do the job.

Ok how about making a spacer plate that bolts onto in place of the missing bit , with the exact angle machined into it then two cap heads counterbored into the spacer and drill and tap the engine block, screw it to the block, with loc tite as a gasket, leaving it slightly proud , then machine down till it just kisses the original face all will be solid and square without the chance of distortion.

yes ok i have thought about that option a lot quicker to build up with weld and machine after if the people on here think it is doable.

I would just hate it to distort the centre main out of its line bore

Would a remote oil filter not be a option
It should weld ok with plenty of pre heat

If you must weld it, I would shape a couple of infill pieces, chamfer the edges and weld them in, trying to fill a cavity like that with just weld in a dirty old casting is not easy and will put a lot of heat into it, a weld which is partly on new material will be much easier and quicker, the ADR will do it easily, use a minimum of a 2.4 electrode, start at around 180 amps and see how it goes

ADRs don't look after their tungstens, you'll be on a 3.2mm for that, and if you can I'd get the whole block hot before you tackle that job. We use a big rod oven for cylinder heads and block pre-heating. Things like that weld so much easier if they are uniformly heated.

Just standing them in front of a space heater makes a massive difference
Hot to the point were you could not touch it

I would just machine up a spacer. Way quicker and neater than trying to bodge it up welding it.

It's a good way to lift the impregnated oil out of a casting too. I can the a vapour blasted gearbox casting that looks spotless, stick it on the oven at 300 degrees and it will come out brown with oil leeching out of it's every pore. It's worth it though as once cleaned up again they weld beautifully.

Thanks for the comments most helpful i will give it some more thought, all i have to do really is get the oil out and back in thats the end result. may have a look at milling it down and just tap the block 1/2" bsp

I am struggling to understand where the pump drillings are in that essembly I totally understand the out from the filter into the main gallery but where does the feed come from ?.

On the picture you have 2 1/8" psp plugs. they are the drillings for the centre main bearing the oil feed is there from the bottom of the block fed from the oil pump.
so you drill at the end lower on the right you will see a radius on the raised casting go in there. the oil then runs along the block casting lower section of pic. and out into the filter. drill into main gallery at the top left then a 3/8" plate bolts over the lot with holes drilled to allow the oil in and out of the filter. Then you have to plug the oil feed from the oil pump. above the lower right hole and before the main gallery.I Drill it 1/2" to the oil out drilling lower right. and tap the rest to the main oil gallery with a first tap it has a taper make a threaded plug. screw it in until i can see it through the oil out hole. lock tight the plug and screw it in until it goes tight on the taper thread job done.I hope that makes sense andy b

MY solution to me problem hope you like it. thinking out of the box all i needed was oil out oil in.Just enough material to seal on the chamfered section
