Like they did on that God awful show "the garage". Merc has blown bulb which throws up a warning sign on the dash. So instead of just changing the bulb and resetting the check light they ran it through a full scan which took hours. Then billed the guy £200 or something proposteras. ****** cowboys

That's probably on the next car!!

Dude just plugged in his lap top to the diagnostic socket and about five mins latter all done.

Soon mechs will be going to work in a three piece suit. But I bet if he had to change the brakes or do something greasy he would need to go out n a training course first !!

You may laugh but we had an agency welder turn up in a 3 piece suit carrying a briefcase every day and would change into overalls, we could only assume he'd told his wife he had an office job?.

Merc has blown bulb which throws up a warning sign on the dash.

Can be difficult on mercs coz they use a bulb substitute maybe a brake light bulb on reduced voltage etc for a rear side or for front side lights it puts on a fog light and you can look but it can deceive you.

Any good garage still has a proper mechanic on site, with basic welding and engineering skills. But not much call, what's to fix bar the odd snapped bolt, rounded nut, something seized or stripped thread. Not that sorting them sort of problems arent a skilled repair.

Can be done with mobile phones over thousands of miles if needed.

Wasn't bad for a production "tacker", stayed about 6 months.

One man one job sort of thing. It's all down to machinery cost, garages can't justify the cost of tackle. All mechanics in theory once fully qualified can rebuild an engine as you are taught if you do all the levels. But without the kit, it gets sent out.

I met John DoubleBoost a couple of weeks ago, and he has a 3 piece suit. Dungarees, fleece and a flat cap.....and a box of fish and chips, almost a briefcase. Do not tell Debs.

I've met a few very skilled mechanics at the stealership when having warranty work done. I'm one of them hanging round the back and like to speak to the guy doing the work. From my experience they appreciate that your interested and even more so the thank you. It's the service managers and such like are the loose link and that's who you deal with. But you get a good service manager and you get a good dealership.

+1 - they seem to follow a flow chart starting at the most expensive component first

When my Disco was under warranty a suspension alarm get going off. Took it back 3 times, first time they replaced the compressor, I can't which bit the second time, third time I gave the service manager a bit of lip and he got a mechanic to look at it and found a connector had been push back in a bulkhead connector and was intermittent.

I went home and looked at the Disco 3 forum and the same root cause came up as the main culprit. Probably why extending warranty on a Disco is over 1200 quid a year and around 300 on a Toyota land cruiser.

Now its been out of warranty for several years, if I have a fault I look on the Disco 3 forum, then either fix it myself or print out the likely problems and take it to my local garage.

Last weird one was if you went in a straight line for a few minutes, like down the motorway, the suspension would lower. Two minutes search on the forum and the likely culprit was the steering sensor not being zeroed so it thinks its going in a tight circle at 70mph. This coincided with my local garage working on the steering so returned and they reset the sensor to 0 and problem gone.

You could have a complete custom install with boom boom speakers for less than that
