Big vice

Well, you learn summat new every day. Up 'til now, I never had any idea we'd produced owt this substantial on the vice front over here.

That's one piece of kit I'd hate to try lugging alone. Apparently there was a No.49 too, which weighed in at 250lb and had 10" jaws.

I couldn't afford the steel to make a bench to do that vice justice, 2 inch thick 8ft x 4ft top and 8" x 8" box frame/legs.

I had an ex Electricity Board Record vice given to me that must have been 8" or bigger which took 2 people to lift. So big couldn't find a use for it so ended up giving it to somebody else !

Nowt wrong with that, I like a big vice. Bit overkill for most jobs but if you have a big job perfect! I think I used to use something a bit similar while working on shortening big loom shafts

That pallet buggy could be any size at all

You would need a short bench too, about 650 tall.

I think I saw something like that when I started my apprenticeship-there were (I think) three of em, bolted to a massive RSJ. Cannot recall the spacing of em, but they were bolted to summat like 3/4" plate welded to the RSJ, which had lesser sized RSJs welded on as legs. The contraption was in the yard going rusty, I think it was sold for scrap because it was made for a one off job or limited production job.
There was a lot of war surplus about then and I am geussing that they were sourced from that. What a shame if they went to scrap.

I don't fancy lifting anything needing a vice that size. I guess that's why you don't see them now

I thought that but they are all fairly big. No need to modify to get an extra 1/2 inch capacity. lol Might get them for 60 quid who knows

ive seen a lot of 6inch vices in good condition go for not a lot of money .45 to fifty quid max

not at that price he wouldnt, if i realy needed one i wouldnt pay more than a ton for it . how often would u need more than a 6inch one ??rebuilt painted and stratened the tommy bar cos some prick overtightned it with a scaffold pole

Nah. The title would have been 'Big bender' if it had been relating to that. One day they'll admit the truth and my insistence on that point will be verified.

There's a tad of difference there though. The normal type of 6" vice is a bit of a beast, granted, but that thing is gargantuan in comparison.

Personally I think he'll have a devil of a time selling it for that fact. Besides collector or bragging rights value, how many would ever need something that size these days? Saying that though, I'd have it in a flash if the price was reasonable.
