There were a frighteningly large number of people in the UK prepared to support Oswald Mosely and his Black Shirts, and quite a few who openly supported Hitler, so we are not immune.

America did exactly what it does now, says one thing and sells weapons to anyone it thinks may further their short term interests, even if there is a reasonable chance they will be on opposite sides in a the near and foreseeable future. There was no thig altruistic in their stance in the early part of ww11, just an opertunity to make money

One of the documentary series (can't remember the name) went into great detail about the build up of the war and how through the 20s and 30s the nazi party came to power. Fascinating how events all conspired to the end result.

In the closing stages of reading the 'unabridged and complete' version of The Big Show by Pierre Clostermann and it's given me a truthful and painfully honest insight into the life of a front-line fighter pilot in WWII. He doesn't pull his punches as he describes not only the difficulty of flying a complex machine in combat but the wearying effect on morale that doing this day in and day out had.
It's also making em realise, as I read more about how far ahead the German engineers and designers were in their aircraft alone, that we were bloody lucky to win in Europe, and that they had Adolf the nutboy making the ultimate decisions for them. Had they had a sane and effective commander we'd have been suing for peace, either that or Truman would have been authorising nuclear strikes on Berlin, Hamburg, Munich etc!

I think the point missed is winning is often just about resolve. In Stalingrad Russian fighters didn't leave a building because it was on fire, in fact they are recorded as still fighting when they themselves were actually on fire! Our lads who took to the sky to defend our airspace so soon after the Dunkirk evacuation were not fighting for a farther land and its expansion plans or for the defence of France and mainland Europe ( countries few of them had ever stood in prior to being sent over to protect it) but for their wives, girlfriends family and frankly themselves! It was the battle of Britain that showed our resolve that diverted Hitler's attention east to Russia. Heck Churchill even persuaded veterans of WW1 that they could actually turn back the land invasion soon to come to our shores with pitchforks and shotguns but then when you have no other viable option you don't take much persuading do you

That's something that dumb founds me, the Germans are nice, intelligent people with good morale and very sociable. Very liberal too, lived and worked in Holland who are thought of as liberal but they are conservative in comparison to the Germans. So how the hell would Nazi propoganda influence intelligent people.

In all honesty, England, Europe & America gave Hitler a good footing for uniting his people.

I presume when you say "England" you actually mean the UK?

I've read Max Hasting's book, Bomber Command, about WW2 bomber crews and that's pretty sobering stuff. I can't imagine living in a time when I'd be expected to fly for hours on end in freezing conditions into enemy territory with a high probability that it would end either in a watery grave or being shot in mid-air. I'm halfway through "All Hell Let Loose", which focuses on the human experiences of WW2. The Axis forces blew it big style by opening multiple fronts. They failed to contemplate the sheer size of the Russian war machine and the will to fight to the bitter end that Russian troops displayed. I consider myself very lucky I was born 20 years after that ended.

ISTR Chamberlain actually wrote "I have no love for the Jews either"; it was found in a document in the archives some years later.
