No it doesn't pay as well but then the skill level is much lower than the guys doing it manually. Some of the wind tower guys make good brass doing it mind. I suppose it's dependant of company.

Wind towers on shore are built using sub arc process. There is a company in Scotland actually called "wind towers Scotland" that does exactly that. There are few dotted about that make em with SAW
I just like to weld. At the min I was employed as a welder but build commercial vehicles from 3.5 to 36 ton flat beds to curtain siders. We have a huge contract for luton vans at the min and there is barly any welding on them. Welding is what I enjoy I would like a welding job. I've looked into doing stuff and have made a few gates and dog kennels in the past getting them fully gavinised ect but there does not seem to be much money in them now not the basic stuff anyway. There is always some guy down the pub who can do it cheaper. What I personaly want to do is become a pipe welder.
I cannot speculate to assume everybody's wage and neither can you but I have travelled and talked and some of the wages earned in this field are significantly better than others. Like I say it's skill, company, location, and title dependent. No there not going to be on the same generally as the guys on the rigs performing to 6G standards but guys on here who make a good living sub arc welding may take offence if you say there money is pants when neither you or I actually know what they earn.
Rose tinted specs? decent money on the job but lots of downtime! spend more time getting there than doing it or be ages away from home in some horrid places away from the wife and kids drinking beer with loads of divorced fellas trying to hit on some weary barmaid that might actually be a bloke in a dress as she has hairy legs if you look closely (which your probably better off not doing)
You don't need to assure me I have involvement in this field with flux and wire combinations, it's not always a case of kick it off and have a cuppa (most of the time it is granted) some guys are skilful at it which makes it a skill to be good at. I have seen a few guys doing full pen SAW roots on tankers with ceramic backing. This is not low skilled work as they are adjusting all the time to ensure its bang on all the way round. And from a visual point of view they have got nothing to see inside or out. It depends on what is classed as a pants wage as you so put it. I've met good operators on more than you say I've met them on less. I would never assume I'm better then them mind.I can assure you the money will be pants it's a very low skilled job and the wages reflect that. I bet there on no more than 500 on a flat week
I'm not sure I agree about the lots of downtime I've oy had to do about 10 weeks away this whole year and could have just had the time off. If the Lads from Lincoln there's no reason why he can't make an easy 50k and have the winter off. He's got all the refineries on the South Humber bank he an commute too. I was there for a fair few months this year. Real easy work lucky to do 4" a day and was getting £20.50 PAYE. Then he's got the steelworks and the powerstations he could commute to, west burton, cottam, Brigg, kidby, staythorpe and probably Drax too!
Well look at the job over the last 25-30 years with its ups and downs and I wasn't talking PAYE I never really talk PAYE as I haven't spent very long in that line, its just my own experience. I wasn't talking about a daily commute either of course one must consider costs of daily travel if your not able to charge it or set it against profit
If he was earning £20.50 and worked every week in the year inclusive of Christmas he should only earn £42,640 gross less his diesel to work and service of his car/van. So the 50k aint going to come exactly "easy" is it now and when he looks at the higher tax and NI .............
I think he was after doing more welding so 4" a day might not float his boat though
You get travel paid anyway. And I'm saying 50k would come easy. £20.50 was just ticking over, do that for part of the year and one shutdown an you'll be well in excess of £50k
£20.50 for 4" a day plus retro works out fairly well and your home every night
Lets just say I shouldn't have you write up a business plan with holes like that in the numbers. Nobody can pay an employee travel from and to their normal place of work and if they did it would / should be taxed as income (travel has to be from your normal place of work to another alternative place of work) and if your maths comes good (it aint looking too good on that mind) he might just take 50k before deductions, easy? No not quite
You have a real chip on your shoulder! I don't care what SAW welders earn nor do I care what you think you know about WPS/WPQR etc or what anyone earns I will pull £60k in 30 weeks from end of march along with all the other welders! It's no big secret...New threads may need opening up here. Some suggestive titles:-
Wps/wpqr adjustment
How much do SAW guys earn
Easiest way to bag 50k.
It's clear you aren't in the game at any sort of level or have ever been otherwise you wouldn't be questioning it. How much did you make on the boilers during the welding season? And your travel goes from home to where you are. So I work for say Alstoms based In Stafford, and they put me on a station 10 miles from me. Do they pay me from their place in Stafford? NOPE!
