They have a unique sound, occasionally have them fly over, but not that low.
Did see a Lynx circling down last year, then it disappeared behind some nearby houses, found out later it had landed at a local school.

Used to get a Chinook over at around 10pm every Tuesday evening - very low window rattler!
Guess they are heading for Lydd barracks and firing ranges on the coast.
Brother and sister in law live about 5 miles from Westlands at Yeovil and not far from RNAS Yeovilton so they are caught in the crossfire! They don't seem to notice the racket but when I was re-doing the guttering on their garage in the summer I was glad when the evening "no fly" times arrived.

I often work around Westlands and it amazes me that you have an airfield smack bang in the middle of the town, often with a helicopter spending hours hovering above it.
The 40 Commando base is fairly close to us and we hear low flying helicopters at night occasionally but don't see many during the day.

i had a helicopter land in my small field next to my house one sunday morning at 7 am 
just heard the noise and thought thats close . looked out of window and the bugger was just 30 foot above the house 
the bosses of the railway turned up and landed. they were renewing the rails past my house on the station during the night

Yeah, I believe that's because it's all you hear about half an hour before it arrives, during the flight and for about 2 hours after you get out!

A few years ago I was in a remote area (collecting a Morris Minor van cab) when I saw a Chinook in distress. It fell out of the sky and I was about to phone emergency services then it recovered and shot back into the air only to do it again , and again !
Turned out the area was where they practiced engine failure and autorotation or whatever. Certainly shocked me.

If you sat on the inside seat (2 either side) you couldn't get full cup of beverage because your shoulder was up against the side of the aircraft and the vibes spilled it, likewise trying to read was a blur. They were mostly used for long haul and max capacity, If I remember rightly it was 3 crew(Pilot-co pilot & stewardess)and 47 rig workers, Ah happy days.

I saw them practicing that with a Sea King at Culdrose in Cornwall, they came down over the perimeter fence really quickly then flared out and dropped it gently onto the runway, looked impressive.
