What does it take to get a gun licence here?Just anyone with no criminal record/somewhere to securely keep it and a clay shooting hobby?

You need a secure cabinet in a specific place, 4 photos of your face, someone to sign to say they know you and a police interview. Clean record is irrelevant, I know people with guns that have done time for abh, robbery, assault, arson, as long as the sentence is less than 3 years, and was over 5 years ago the police ignore it

Mine wasn't here long enough to have a good look at me. Give my cabinet a shake to make sure it was bolted down, asked if I know how to fill out the ticket when buying a gun and asked if I was a member of any clubs. Then he left and about a week later the ticket arrived

I think the sentence is justified, for pure stupidity. First rule of gun handling, never point any firearm at anyone whether its loaded or not. He specifically pointed the gun at him and pulled the trigger. What did he expect to happen. A rifle shoots a bullet, which that plate would have stopped, but a shotgun shoots tiny balls of lead which disperse and scatter, as they did here and resulted in a death, purely due to stupidity

It says the plate was plastic and as the pellets hit it it deformed into a funnel which channeled them inwards.
Not very clued up on firearms but surely a bullet is more likely to penetrate a bullet-proof vest than shotgun pellets?

Didn't see that bit. Just assumed it wad something like ar500 steel and the shot was diverted rather than stopped.

Ar500 will stop a rifle round as it absorbs the energy and deforms a bit too, shotgun rounds like bird shot are less likely to be fully stopped as the pellets can ricochet off and strike other parts of the body

Don't bank on a plate stopping a rifle bullet, std MS plate is easy to shoot through with a CF rifle. This fact surprises a lot of people as they think lead bullet steel plate no contest but even at 100 yards or much,much greater 3/8" MS is no match for a speeding lump of lead special Mil spec AR plate needs to be fairly thick to boot. 3/8" at 600 yards in a fixed position is no match for a deer class rifle for instance
What gets me is if you want to test a vest don't have a living body inside it. The guy got his just deserves he was in breech of his FAC conditions to try such a thing, which in itself is a very serious criminal matter.

If we were to try to air whats wrong today the server that is hosting this forum would run out of space. Seriously though, if you look at democracy as a concept it has one major flaw - it is the rule of the popular, if it isn't popular you don't rule.
BTW, I have just watched the news, is it just me or does Ed Miliband look more like an Lolly pop man than a potential prime minister.

Not sure about the uk but in ireland its illegal to have a vest fitted with bullet proof armour, you're only allowed have stab proof armour. The vests are all the same and you buy the armour separate.

Do you know why - what's the thinking behind this?

I don't live anywhere that would be considered dangerous and naturally have never felt any need to wear protective clothing, but why wouldn't it be legal to have some protection I wonder - it's not like carrying a weapon which could be used on others after all.
