Pillar Drill Speed Reduction

have u ever tried putting 1 inch drills in a half inch chuck with reduced shanks at a lower speed. u realy need a no 2 taper and use taper drills on your quill for anything over half inch and decent motor and pulleys to pull them over

so the reduction setup is really not necessary then? what about if wanting to use holesaws up to 100mm?

Would the increased torque on a smaller machine not be an issue? I imagine it would flex and judder all over the place if you overstretched a smaller machine. My "toy" pillar drill is bad enough without modification

I doubt a small machine would be happy with such torque. Do you allready have the drill? If not, then get a big old one off the eBay. Those little drills aren't worth messing about with, they're only designed to drill small holes (which need a high(er) speed) and big drills would probably snap or bend bits.

The diagram of the 16:1 reduction looks cool though.

its a super 8 drill. i plan on replacing the 1/2hp motor with a 1hp one. pretty meaty old drill.

btw, anyone know what the knob on the front is supposed to do? mine is missing the knob.

Maybe the knob adjusts the play on the shaft? (Ooh err)

yea theres a slot down the quill that a pin locates in to to stop it turning i have one on my churchill drill

that depends on how many holes u are going to drill larger than half inch

that 4 to one kit will reduce your bottom end speed no end but it will also reduce your top end speed as well

I suspect ****** was referring to the back gear. It may a bit more fiddly/involved than throwing extra pulleys at it but far more elegant than the roguefab crude method of halving or quartering the overall gearing and less likely to suffer from belts slipping which is probably why Kerry used a back gear instead of adding an extra pulley and belt... kinda the best value between cheaper all belt drive and more spendy 'full on' gear head drill

I have something similar on my Fobco drill but only because the motor packed up and all the spare motors I had wouldn't fit directly and most were running at 2500 rpm. That and I was too tight to buy a new one when I could play at being Heath Robinson. I can never be bothered swapping pulleys so I just drill everything slowly with cutting paste, my drills rarely need resharpening other than that it works great. If I want to drill quicker I either use my air or electric hand drill. If I remember i'll take a pic tomorrow

it wouldnt be worth the hassle of sourcing gears and making the fittings and countershaft ect to alter it for the odd large hole to be drilled .the cost of gears alone make it a non starter your better off buying another with backgear and sell the one u have its a good make and if in good nick will fetch a good price

Just a note, if you need to get a good grip on a shank and its going in a chuck, I have managed to grind 3 flats on the shank which the chuck engages on, then it doesnt slip, although the chuck might fall off its taper or get mangled inside in a crash or worse. Some of the bigger hole drill arbors are 3 lobed to start with.

Ive got some monster 60mm blacksmith reduced shank drills that bizzarely were round shank instead of morse taper that I use in the lathe at low rpm, and I had to grind them all 3 lobed to cope. I wouldn't buy reduced shank, but as for reusing a freebie someone gave me, it got me out of a sticky late night situation a few times.
