Tube flaring tool, old, but what for?

I am desperately trying to sort out the garage and see what is useful or not.
Had this sat on a shelf for around 12 years if not a bit longer. It is a tube type flaring device, hs five formers in totals, one is fitted, seems to be for imperial OD sizes such as 5/8, 3/4, 1 inch and 1 1/4 inch But I can not fathom what the fitting would have been for. Anyone shed any light?

What about air brake lines on lorries, I have something similar that I used for the lines on my Ford D Series 16 Tonner.

Looks like a flaring tool dependant on the angle it flares at, I think 37 degree for pipe and 45 degree for tube
Just seen you say OD so would be tube like refrigeration tubing

Not measured the angle of the flare but less then 45 degrees by quite a way, could be 37 degrees it seems quite sharp.
But up to inch and quarter?

Those sizes we could be talking steam pipes. See if the East Lancs Railway are interested in it.

I once had an old compressor with bsp fittings on 3/4" copper tube and they had a sharp flare angle on them.

This unit covers the sizes up to 1 1/4 inch found after doing a search on 37 degree flare. But still does not tell me what it is for, says soft steel copper and aluminium, so not what I would call high pressure

In refrigeration we only flared up to 3/4' copper after that size we sweated fittings

We used to flare "Hydroelastic" suspension pipes they were 9/16 - 5/8 steel horrible stuff

snooper you are brilliant. the picture on the right is the one I have. But I would never have put it down to aircraft type use, it came from a shop that shut down in Blackburn to make way for a retail park. Never any connections with aircraft as far as I new, unless there was a BAE close by?

To think I was going to put it in the scrap pile. I have to try and sell that for some more goodies.

Like maybe BAe Samlesbury? They are still Military Aircraft and Aerostructures to this day. Assuming this thing is aircraft related and doesn't have other applications that's the most likely candidate I can think of.

Not so likely the old ROF as Blackburn was CSF division (control systems and fuses) but you never know as they did all-sorts over the years. Chorley was mostly explosives filling and warheads but again you never know.

I'm currently only a hop, skip and a jump away over Winter Hill in en ex DeHavilland plant (then Hawker Siddley, then British Aerospace, then MBUK, now MBDA). I started here when it was still British Aerospace and we were hived off as a separate business with the Marconi merger that saw the formal creation of BAe Systems. MBDA is the formal name but I believe informaly it's origins are the companies that were merged (Matra, British Aerospace Dynamics, Alenia). All the missiles parts of the merging companies.

There was Samlesbury Engineering not BAe, or predecessors, related but they did stuff with jets - one of which was on a boat that quite famously crashed and sank on Coniston with a Mr Campbell at the controls.

Nutter Aircrafts - Not so much aerospace stuff nowadays as far as I know but formed in 1939 with a name like that they must have done aircraft "stuff" in the past. Used to be in the mill next to LTS but moved to walker park now I think.

There's an outfit in India Mill in Darwen that made parts for Thrust SSC and who still do stuff for BAe (think they are also doing bits for Bloodhound as are we). Dunno how long they have been around though as they are a composites business which is a relatively young industry.

My uncle lived in Darwen and did his apprenticeship at English Electric in Preston doing stuff for Lightnings.

Rolls Royce at Barnoldswick is in commuting distance and make aircraft engines.

Only a little further afield and there are/were British Aerospace plants at Warton, Chadderton and Woodford and these are just three I've worked at in the last 15 or so years so what else there might have been..... I did commute for a few months to Airbus at Broughton but that's possibly a bit far afield.

Lots of aircraft possibilities in the area when you start looking

I know more of the Bolton ones as that is where I originated from, there was also a plant in Farnworth, but memory is very vague from the days of me being a lad.

I think I have found a company called Cobham at the top of the road to where the old shop was, and I seem to remember one of the signs having a triple blade propeller, so I assume there has been industries here for the aircraft business.

I think the shop was an old Merser's hardware store before demolished and moved, it sold all sorts, more on the engineering side as I still have some old taps and dies from there. I remember the places off Lostock Way in Horwich, mainly because I used to play in the Bolton Borough brass band and did the band used to play there for occasions. Remember one event there were racing cars, more like the 24 hour La-mans type vehicles..

Ah well it sounds like an all our yesterdays, back to the present.
