Lead welding

I have a large oxy bottle and a large bottle for my mig with Air products which each month is silly money...i want to start playing with lead forming and welding (username clue) but dread renting another bottle for the acetalene<<<spell. My question is will propane and oxy be up to the mark with regards to flame formation needed to burn and weld lead...not having much luck the last couple of nights trying iff ime honest

if you want to make and form apron flashing it is cheaper to just buy the pre formed stuff than to make your own once you start paying for acetylene. I have done a few flashing jobs recently and the preformed stuff for the chimney aprons are a decent fit.

as far as I know propane and oxy isnt capable of welding anything as the flame is wrong and there is no shielding effect

dont like propane or lead work??....i just cant seem to get the match head blue blob in front of the tip,its either to long or blows out with the propane

used preformed before but its hard to get irregular sizes plus sometimes its easier to repair a couple of expansion splits in situ than strip the back of the stack slate work out and the costs to the punter passed on.

I just tell em if they want it repaired they need a new section and it will cost. Roofers tell the same, oxy acet is just too expensive for small jobs

LOL...not around here matey,theres a line of roofers they can call willing to repair so i must join that line to survive

round here you either get a new section or put up with the leak. I don't know anyone that has oxy/acet except the people like me that got it for cutting before realising propane is cheaper

I've never tried welding with propane myself but I do know you need a different welding nosle for propane use.

When you say "playing" I assume you dont mean it literally. Lead is very toxic.

54 years old and been roofing since i was 14 so the fact i dont have 3 heads and 2 necks ive either been very lucky or very carefull using lead....ta for the advice though

I did a bit of 'playing' with a large tub of potassium nitrate + various other compounds and chemicals around age 14, recon its more luck than care that I still have 1 head and 1 neck!

Call the BOC head office and speak to them about renting Oxy/acet. I keep hearing on here that they have just done a deal on Oxy/acet which is much better than the normal, eye watering price they used to charge. Things have come on with BOC, they are now offering deals on O/A and Argoshied and are worth speaking to. Perhaps the bottle sizes would be too small, but worth asking. Don't try calling in at a local depot, they don't normally know of the deals, you need the head office/sales.

If you're going to be lead bashing in-house and, lead burning in-house too. Use TIG, DC e-, about 15 amp, 1mm tungsten. Same preparation required, except a wire brush is ok for removing oxides.

Sugar too. My mate made a smoky we called 'the lasagne' as it was sized similar. What a cloud! Probably affected air traffic let alone the ingress of kids back into school after lunch. I copied his recipe for that one, but failed to keep the heat during mixing low enough and suffered 'in parents house whilst they are in the next room' ignition problems. Panicking, I had to take the lava-spewing air-pellet tin off the hob and carry it by hand through 2 patio doors till I could throw it into the garden=serious blisters!!
Then there was the thermite....

I would never have dreamed of doing stuff like that or mixing agricultural and petrochemicals
