siezed and rounded nuts

need to remove 3 seized and rounded nuts from an exhaust flange. Got no space apart from just enough to get a socket in there.

tried releasing oil and the nut version of easy out but no joy, the nut just rounded more.

cant get grinder or hacksaw in to cut them off, not even enough space to get a torch in there without burning other things.

any suggestions?

Split the nuts with a sharp chisel ?

I had to change the down pipes on my XJR1300 recently. Rusted and seized to 6uggery they were - no chance of ever unscrewing them.

I ground up a couple of funny shaped chisels and either split the nuts, or cut them off in slices. Easy peasy! The whole job took about an hour, and no damage to the studs either. Happy days!

i haven't got space to get a chisel in on 2 of them, and no room to swing a hammer. I had a go with a nut splitter but got no where as cant get it on square

Can you get such a thing as a cable cutter to go through metal. Like a bit of piano wire with handles...a garrotte type thing in other words. Im sure ive seen ones for branches/wood...maybe a metal cutting variety available?

how much of a job is it to remove the manifold and front pipe? Probably not an easy option but you seem to have run out of those?

Or, a set like the Irwin ones which come in a set of different sizes and are designed for just this job - eBay's full of them.

I've had a bit of success with the Irwin nut extractors, like a socket with a left hand very coarse thread in them. They use a 3/8 or 1/2 drive depending in the size.

tried the Irwin set, nuts are too soft and just damage even more.

i have got all nuts off exhaust manifold but cant pull the pipe through due to the bends, hence why in trying to get it off.

i started hack sawing through the flexi as that's the bit being replaced but i have hit something that is 'kin hard and is just blunting the blades

probably get it on one of the studs, and the part of the flexi i have already cut, but not the bit that's left. I might risk a bit of h and s abuse and put a worn 9" disc on my grinder...would certainly give me the reach i need

I just removed the Irwin rails from the LT, and though access was much better than you have I still needed to cut 5 of 20 with a Dremel cutting disc at arms length, on my back, in between the chassis rails and into the corners.

As long as you can thin them down with crossing cuts you have a chance.

hadn't thought of a dremmel, that would be ideal. I don't have o e but i reckon i could borrow one for an hour

Yep I used the little dremel ez lock cutting disks to cut through an M14 bolt. No probs at all. I just have a cheap Clarke rotary tool and the dentist extension thing is not much bigger than a marker pen for getting to tight spaces.

possibly on 2 of them, the nuts have a collar on them which is what I think was stopping me getting a splitter on there

i had the same problem last week on the manifold nuts on a corsa.
cast iron manifold had cracked and a garage my nephew's girlfriend took the car too
tried to undo them and rounded them off. and quoted £550 to do the job
as they said they would proberly have to take the engine out as they will proberly snap some studs.

i use my die grinder and carbide burr to grind throu the nut, then wound them off with grips
also used air chisel gun to put a nick in the nut then chiselled it round to undo them.
in the end i damaged the thread on 3 studs, and just wound them out with mol grips and replaced them.

and got a new manifold/cat for £125

If you can get a socket in you should be able to get a welding torch in
Heat is the only way (apart from cutting them with a die grinder)
I have a welding torch with a straight tip for tight places

im not worried about just cutting the through the nut and stud to be honest, it is a cat flange so access to both sides when it is off so I will just remove the studs and nut n bolt it afterwards with some SS nuts and a good helping of grease on the threads first.
